Are we closer to the south than the north? Absolutely. But I think we shift away from the cultural definition of the south as a w
As a stereotype in mainstream media and among ignorant people who have never traveled. You think east Texas has the same accent as central Alabama. I am pretty sure Appalachian culture is as known, or more well known. We put moonshine on the map.

Naaaaahhhh...i live in Virginia...bunch of transplants from the Northeast...i grew up in SC and La, nothing like that here. Once you get near the cities of VA or NC (Charlotte, Richmond, Raleigh-Durham, Va Beach, especially NoVa) you lose all the Southern feel of those states.
However, once you get out into the country like where I live...it's very similar...

I agree. Real southerners are protestant.

Bitch we invented the south

The states of the Confederacy. I have tentatively admitted Oklahoma on a probationary basis. Kentucky, Missouri, Maryland and West By God Virginia still can't come.

I agree, Midtiger. While some parts of the south may not fit in neatly with the stereotypes the media enforces that does not make them any less southern.
Even during the Confederate days the states as a whole were not one homogeneous culture. Not everyone was running cotton/cane/tobacco farms with slaves. Some simply didn't agree with Northern ideology.
I think the qualities that identify and define the South are our natural independent streak, our honor, and our hospitality. It's more a mindset than a location. Those who fit this mold are Southern in my book, regardless of where you hang your hat.

Virginia is 3 1/2 hours from NYC and 30 minutes from Pennsylvania. Not a southern state.

For this Wisconsinite it is
Alabama
Louisiana
Mississippi
Georgia
Tennessee
South Carolina
After that I feel I would rank the next Southernmost states as
Kentucky
Florida
North Carolina
Virginia
Arkansas
Southern Missouri
