So do I.

Might be why I’ve gotten along with the cat so well.

Get one of these: Furminator. Use it now and then (on the cat).

Massively reduces cat hair problems.

Male cats that are older tend to have urinary stones — ours had to have surgery to remove them and we had to change his food. Never had another problem.

Ours is so easy to take care of — not a jumper, not a crier — just a sweet boy.

Also our doesn’t scratch on furniture just on the rug and not often. He showed up as a stray and my daughter loved him and he hung around. He had to be abused — he doesn’t like men but kids and teens and I am ok.

He’s really not a pain at all — andi second the furminator brush.

They are awesome. Not needy like dogs but if you aren't a POS they'll be perfectly companionable. I have two tabbies, never scratch anything, never messed anywhere but the litterbox (Gen 2 Litter Robot), and can be amused with a laser pointer.

Posted this in a similar thread recently:

I had cats all my life but learned within the last 5 years that cats are usually either horizontal or vertical scratchers. Learned that when I got 2 cats that only scratch the scratching pads not the posts.

Cats don’t carry coronavirus. But they would if they could.

Male cats can tend to have urinary tract issues. Don’t go too cheap on his food.

He will respect you more than the woman.

They claw on shite so get them one of those things that is covered on carpet so it will not claw on your furniture.

I know that I prefer dogs..

We weren’t cat people then several months ago I found some abandoned kittens at my office. I kept one of them that we all now love. Wife and kids get pissed that he follows me around 24/7. I almost love him more than my dog. He’s in my lap right now purring away.

Exactly. They might try to buy a stereo with your credit card. And will screw up your credit too.

Keep him indoors as he'll live longer.

Get him fixed.

Get him microchipped in case he escapes.

Cap his claws with plastic caps from pet store, so can't wreck furniture.

Declawing is cruel, don't do that.

- Keep the litterbox clean
- Dry food will help you keep the litterbox clean but make sure there's plenty of fresh H2O available.
- Start regular grooming activities while it's still young so it gets used to it (brushing, clipping claws, baths)
- Take it on occasional car rides while young as well. That way it doesn't stress on vet trips, evacuations, etc...
- If the cat looks anxious or stressed - you can "slow blink" it to calm it down. youtube vid (1min)

ETA:

- Get it fixed and chipped
- Keep a water spray bottle handy. A spritz and a firm "NO" is enough to prevent unwanted behaviors
- 15min of play time daily makes for a happy cat

That's all I can think of ATM.
