Same thing that should have happened to Reunion Arena in Dallas. It needs to get blown up for a scene in an action movie.

Me, too! Born in Houston and had season passes til we moved to BTR. Went back many times.
My husband, though, was all about the Astros, and loved the Dome.
My parents went to a Johnny Cash concert not too long after the Dome opened. The roof was a travesty…leaked on their heads.
Lot of family history there for us, but it needs to go gently into that good night.

Astrodome was built into the ground some 25 to 30 feet. If you could just snap your fingers and the entire structure just disappeared... asbestos and all... in 2013 it was estimated it would take about $12 million just to fill the 25+ foot hole. Probably almost double that today.
Add in all the other shite and this has all the ingredients for a nice government boondoggle where politically connected contractors can really make some money. Probably in excess of $80-$100 million just to complete the teardown and fill the hole.
We aren't even talking construction yet. This is where the big money investors clean up.

the painful level of nostalgia i have for the Dome is only surpassed by the painful level of nostalgia i have for Astroworld.

randels astroworld seasons passes were basically summer daycare for my parents

I thought there was a proposal to preserve the “shell” and turn it into a big semi outdoor event center. They could do concerts and hold tailgating for Texans games, etc under it. Seems like that would be a good use.

there were a few summers that i think i went to astroworld north of 20 times. i have such good memories of that place. i hate that it's gone, and especially since it's gone for really no good reason.
-edit- also, "randall's". come on baw.

I would not want to see it demolished. It was called the 8th wonder of the world. It may be on the Registered List of Historic Places and can’t be demolished
You do not want to see it demolished because of how locals branded it?
It stands as a decaying relic of outdated engineering. What is the cost of maintaining the skeleton of a sports stadium from a bygone era and why is maintaining it better than demolishing it?
We have pictures, we have video. You can get those nostalgic moments on demand for the 5 seconds it takes to relish moments from you childhood. Why should taxpayers subsidize your nostalgia?

Only went once, for two hours. Six Flags in Arlington was better imo.
Went to the dome a bunch though. Saw a baseball game one afternoon and a preseason football game that night once... That was awesome.

Still a pond. The field level is already below street grade, if you recall.
That's why an Astros game got rained out in the 1970s.

This is actually what killed them. Summer passes became daycare for 9-17 year old kids. That many kids, completely bored with rides in a few weeks, started finding other shite to do at Astroworld. They ended up having all kinds of trouble and families stopped going.
Just a bad marketing play. Instead of investing in a better experience they sold "lifetime memberships" like a struggling gym.
Out of Business... was predictable.

i've never been to Six Flags over Texas. objectively, i suspect you're probably right that it's "better"...i'm sure it was certainly cleaner and a hell of a lot less ghetto.
but for us houston kids from the 80s and 90s man...Astroworld was just so damn fun. the ghetto-ness of it sort of added to the fun, because it wasnt "dangerous" ghetto-ness like it probably would be now. and there were some absolutely amazing rides there too, many which were groundbreaking at the time.
greezed lightnin
sky screamer
looping starship
texas cyclone
sigh...I hate that my kids wont get to experience it.

meh...sort of. it was part of it, but not exactly. there were some kids like that i'm sure, but me and my friends really just went to go ride rides and buy overpriced food and drinks.
go watch the Defunctland episode about astroworld on youtube. basically Six Flags just stopped spending money on the park, which resulted in the decline. the lack of security and crumbling infrastructure played hand in hand with what you're saying about too many teenagers there causing trouble. but it wasnt just a matter of sellign too many season passes.

Sounds crazy, but indoor gas station sounds nice. No more pumping gas in the heat of the summer or cold of winter.
Need to find a way to vent the fumes though, otherwise the stadium roof may blast off into space.

I was absolutely a shithead, especially around waterworld. We loved to block up the slides by stopping mid way down it so the next person would slam into us.
that isn't just what killed them. Six flags was pretty poorly run and had ton of shitty parks that were money pits.
Also, as much as we wax romantic about the park. It was really outdated even in 2000. Serial thiller was cool but the rest of the rides was like taking a time machine to 1985.
But yea, a lot of other cultures took advantage of the same great deal that my parents. By the early 2000s astroworld was pretty hood.
