I thought it was a prop that was voted on in Harris County several years ago. The voters voted for it to be torn down and the county judge did not agree and so it sits there rotting.
It needs to be torn down.

This was put to a vote of the citizens of Harris County. The result was to shite can it.
However the county judge disagreed and overrode the vote

I would not want to see it demolished. It was called the 8th wonder of the world.
It may be on the Registered List of Historic Places and can’t be demolished

It is, but that doesn't mean it can't be demolished. Just makes it harder and more expensive due to required documentation.

While a cool idea, that would become a popular suicide spot like the Vessel in NYC.

Tear down the sides keeping the main structural suppots and keep the roof up.
The roof is the only thing that is iconic.

Additionally gives a large shaded area for NRG park.

I went to the Astrodome on the weekend it opened in April of 1965. Saw the Astros play the Yankees in an exhibition game. Whitey Ford, Joe Pepitone, Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris, Bob Aspromonte, John Bateman, Mike Cuellar, Larry Dierker, Don Larsen, Joe Morgan, Rusty Staub, Jimmy Wynn. What a great memory!

1. i grew up going to astros games in the astrodome, and i have a very special place in my heart for it 2. i literally have two astrodome seats in my garage 3. seriously, i have a painful level of nostalgia for the astrodome

This sounds like my household (Minus the seats!! Jealous!!) and I agree. I went to a function at NRG Centre in November and the Astrodome is sad.
