It takes me right about 9 months to finish off a fifth of whiskey so I think I qualify for the under.

Hey. frickface. Sorry you’re frustrated, but you probably shouldn’t be drinking all the time if you’re responsible for a god damn train.

What exactly makes someone an alcoholic?

I mean, i’ve Got a FULL bar at my house. I’m talking nicer and better selection than a lot of smaller restaurants. Racks of wine, all sorts of infusions I make And share with friends.

I have a drink most nights, a glass of wine or two. Maybe a scotch before bed.

Or a couple beers when I get home off of work.

If I have friends over, which I frequently do, i’ll Always offer a drink. Special occasions i’ll Open a bottle of single malt.

Watching a game we might do a round or 3 of shots.

But I rarely get drunk. I can’t even remember the last time I couldn’t remember, because i’ve Got a very high tolerance.

Never gotten a DUI, when I do go out, which is rare now, i’ll Uber.

But it’s quite often I have a drink in my hand. I just enjoy alcohol. A Bloody Mary on a Saturday or Sunday morning is delightful.

A Moscow mule in the evening is grand, a good bottle of wine with a good steak is divine, and I enjoy pairing different drinks with different foods.

So if alcohol is a constant factor in my life, but there aren’t any negative effects from it...am I an alcoholic?

I see it as more of a hobby, Something to enhance life, to share with friends.

Is that bad?

Earlier in this thread I said that 35% of this board are alcoholics, with 25% being functional alcoholics and 10% being dysfunctional. No insult intended, but I had you in mind for the former category when I thought through some posters. Don’t worry, I lumped myself in there too.

I mean, I can go without alcohol with no ill effects. If i’m On call, or any other reason where I shouldn’t drink...I don’t drink. No problem. I seldom feel like I NEED a drink...

There’s just something very relaxing about sitting by the fire with a glass of whiskey or wine, smoking a pipe or cigar.

So if I want one i’ll Usually have one.

My MO for dates was to cook something fancy and Pick a nice bottle of wine from my rack, then get to know each other over several glasses.

It wasn’t a question to Bella...it was posed to everyone...

Because sometimes you need outside perspective.

Would you say I have a problem?

There isn’t a definition to an actual alcoholic

You and I know this

Then you aren't an alcoholic. They can't control the urge and let it impact their family/work life

I mean this is largely how I am as well, but I’m still a bit concerned. Granted my drinking hasn’t escalated since 2011, except for briefly in 2015 for good reason, but it’s still so engraved in my life and soul that I’d have an extremely hard time giving it up cold turkey. Like if I was a woman, that would drive me insane to give it up for 9 months. I think you’re the same here.

Yeah, but sometimes I look at the obscene amount of liquor I have and go “do I have a problem”?

I’m a sale junkie though...I find stuff at great prices and just add it to my collection.

I’m talking hundreds of bottles and most not even opened or almost full.

I tell myself i’m the worst alcoholic ever because I don’t drink enough.

Even though I drink often...

I think my high tolerance has a lot to do with it. I can drink a bottle of red and barely feel it

Was? You celibate these days?

I think there's a lot of gray area. I drink a whole let less than I did at one time, but still more than average I'm sure. There is no one definition of a drinking problem to me, but rather a case by case. That said, more people have problems than they think, I'm sure.

If you have a high enough tolerance to not feel a bottle of red, then you’re either Andre the Giant or somewhat of an alcoholic. I’ve met you in person, so you’re not former. I don’t have anywhere near your tolerance, but I feel your mindset. You’re functional when it comes to alcohol, but it could spiral out of control in a few years if you allow it.

I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt that he found himself a nice lady. I don’t consider when I cook for my girlfriend a date unless it’s a really nice one where I go all out.

Same. I don't drink during the week anymore. It isn't conducive to staying skinny and, without marriage/kids to make excuses like so many do, it is important to me that I stay not just "not overweight" but legitimately in shape.

But I don't go out to dinner and not order alcohol. Would be weird. My weekend plans are typically enjoying the weather on a patio, or catching up with friends over dinner/drinks, or date night somewhere nice. All of that involves drinks for me.

Sober January or whatever it is people are doing is not at all something I'd be interested in. Still, keeping it only to weekends and very rarely getting hammered anymore has taken care of whatever issue I might have had at one time. My gut health alone thanks me for it. It is night and day the difference in a morning after drinking vs a morning after not. That actually makes it easy for me to not drink most nights.

Believe it or not i settled down. Found someone who appreciates me and loves me and matches up in so many ways. Who tolerates all my bad behaviour (which isn’t that bad these days.)

Who likes me for me, who helped make my house a home again. A partner to help me in this journey of life. Someone who wanted to be a family again, who loves my kids and gives them the feminine aspect i couldn’t.

It took 6 years but i’m Doing things I never thought I would again, feeling things i swore i’d never feel.

Engaged Christmas Eve.
