What part of non-sports history did you witness (in-person)?

I once had a 101 year old patient who said she was married to a sailor and she was expecting for the first time. She said they were stationed in Pearl Harbor. Pearl Harbor was attacked and her husband was killed. She said the stress caused her to miscarry. Losing her husband and child sounded horrific, but I guess enough time had passed that she could casually talk about it.
But it made me think,”I was taught history…but this woman lived it!”
About the only (minor) history I can recall I witnessed/lived through was:
-The French Quarter Cabildo Fire (was one of the first 911 calls)
-Stuck working at a hospital for 21 days straight during Katrina
-One of 2 million people who showed up for the largest NOLA parade (Saints Super Bowl Parade)
That’s about all I can think of. What part of history did you witness in person?

On TV
That show was HUGE when Regis hosted it.
There’s probably some people on this board who had Space Shuttle Columbia wreckage in their yard.

Lived through Katrina, as most of us did. I was also in town (Bogalusa) when the Gaylord chemical plant had a rail car explode. People still getting paid from that lawsuit.

September 1987, saw Pope John Paul II when he visited New Orleans. Didn't get to attend mass, which I regret.
February 1st 2003 Space Shuttle Columbia breaking apart on reentry.
Watched on live tv as both WTC towers fell and our world change forever.
May 2013 Got to listen to the 14th Dalai Lama lecture at the Lake Front. (Maybe not "historical" but for me it was.

I was actually kind of looking for listings/anecdotes of an in-person witness to historical-ish moments, not just live tv historical moments.
I'm 52 and I've seen a lot of live broadcasted moments in that time, but I wasn't "there" when 99.9% of them happened.
