Lol dude. One of my teams manages a fleet orders of magnitude bigger than the largest fire departments. I swim in analytics on reliability, cost, maintenance, driver proficiency, etc. This is blatant waste. Whatever mental gymnastics you use to try and justify it are flawed.

quote:I'm not doing mental gymnastics. I don't have a team that manages fleet orders. I was the guy that actually did the budget, controlled the vehicle usage, ordered the equipment that went on it, tried the specialty vehicle thing, had to be sure everyone was together and ready to respond at all times. That was my job. I'm not on the outside looking in and using my experience from a similar job or listening to my firefighter relatives. I'm the guy that did this friggin shite for 33 years. I spected out trucks for several different purposes. I did it all.

FACT: When you have to have a 4 man team ready to handle any call at any time it is cheaper to have ONE truck (which you must have anyway) completely equipped and manned even just to go for a grocery run.

Engines and drivetrains need to be started and used on a regular basis for reliability and longevity, rather than starting them daily and letting them sit idling in the firehouse seems a better use of fuel to drive them to the grocery store, also gives the drivers a opportunity to maintain competency driving the trucks when it is not a emergency situation, a fire truck does not handle like F150.
I worked on the 22nd floor of a building in Metairie for several years. Several times a day a fire truck would come screaming out of a firehouse near Esplanade, haul arse west on Esplanade for about a mile, then shut down the sirens, make a u-turn and ease back to the firehouse in silent mode. Every day at least 3 or 4 times without fail.

Another thing people don’t think about is insurance ratings. All the one bitching about using bare equipment and people would be the first ones to bitch when homeowners rates are through the roof. If they want to complain about it, go raise hell to PIAL for us always having to get more and more stuff.

That's not it. It was a pearl white truck with flames. I helped build it.

Why does everyone need to respond to a 10mph rear ender?
What happens when that fender bender turns into a two car fire because one of the driver's is a POS and doesn't take care of their vehicle and some fuel line is punctured in that fender bender? The EMS folks gonna put it out?

Then you call the Fire dept
Posted on 10/19/20 at 7:45 am to IAmNERD
Yea thats a dumb thing to get mad about.
What pisses me off is when you see the firetruck blow through a red-light sirens blasting just to turn in the local diner down the road for lunch. THAT is what we should collectively be pissed about.

It really seems there are a lot less fires happening. I would assume due to better suppression tech and better building codes that prevent them.

The pumper on a firetruck eventually wears enough that it fails the pressure requirements for certification of the truck. Has nothing to do with how pretty and how well taken care of the truck is. At some point, they must be replaced.
Can they not replace the pump instead of the entire truck?

Please enlighten me as to what preventative maintenance will stop fuel lines from being “punctured“.?

Lots of fires in Cali. Antifa with the broken window economic fallacy

LOL I wasn't even talking to you, rather responding to the bullshite notion that equipment needs to be run for no reason to keep it ready. Especially the ones I'm referencing that serve inner loop Houston and probably get called out to fender benders several times a day.
But since you've input yourself as the representative for FDs everywhere to explain why I'm wrong. The particular FD I'm talking about has more than one truck. Actually, they have a ladder, a large pump, 2 EMS vehicles that look like they could run the Baja 1000, and 3-4 3/4 ton diesel 4x4 trucks depending on the day. They have a shite ton of resources, but the only vehicles I ever see come out are the ladder or pump truck.
Which one goes to get grocery's? Ladder or pump.
Call to the neighborhood across the street that they should know by now that the truck can't get down the street due to traffic and narrow streets? Ladder then double back and get something smaller.
Which one is parked in from of the local polling location on election day when they're whining for more money so they send on-duty FD personnel and a vehicle that they leave running the whole time to sit so they can guilt tax payers into giving them more money while the $500k truck behind them sucks down diesel so one dude can soak up some A/C and charge his iPhone? That's rights its the good old ladder truck.
I have zero clue about your department, nor do I care because I'm not paying for your shite. What I see is blatant waste then blind defense. This is typical government BS.

Okay, I just didn't wanna say it if you had worked there. Peoples Health has several floors in 2 Lakeway. #2200 is their primary address.
You DEA?
A young black gal in the parking garage elevator assumed I was an "8th Floor" one afternoon.
Confused, I said "Huh? who parks on the 8th floor?"
She said, "DEA. You look like one of them"
