There is a confederate museum in Richmond that is by far the best Civil War exhibit I have seen.

National WWII Museum in New Orleans

Natural History Museum in San Francisco
If you have kids, and honestly even if you don't, also check out the Exploratorium.

If you like military aircraft, the Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio and Naval Aviation Museum at NAS Pensacola are good.

There's an annex to the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum out near Dulles airport that is really good and a lot more accessible than the one on the Mall in DC.

Of course, WWII Museum in NOLA.

Crystal Bridges in Bentonville, AR

I know I know. Seriously though it's world renowned. Walton had to spend her money on something.

I haven't been since they reconstructed it, but the Dali museum in St Pete is supposed to be good.

I'll be going soon to check out the MC Escher exhibit.

Pima Air & Space museum in Tucson is really cool. It's right by the Boneyard at Davis-Monthan AFB so it has a ton of old military aircrafts.

Echo this.

Also, you can get tours of the boneyard. It's pretty cool, especially if you've ever had experience with any of those aircraft. I briefly worked on some of the aircraft now in the boneyard, and it's really interesting to see them there with the same unit / tail markings etc.

Yeah I know a guy who flew B-58s which is a pretty obscure plane and they have one at Pima so it was cool finally seeing one of those.

Those two cities are the obvious ones. ;-)

So out of NYC, DC and Chicago, which one isn't a city?

Obviously DC. It's a district. Washington is a city.

Worth it for the Diego Rivera mural alone.

City Museum in St. Louis is absolutely a must.

The Dia Beacon and Storm King are worth a visit in upstate New York.
