40 as well. Used to have a regular mattress with tempurpedic foam pad. Had no idea what I was missing out on until I got the sleep number.

Sometimes 4 but sometimes 3.
Truth be told, I normally just settle in the middle of those.

I had one and returned it. What they don't tell you is that the adjustable frame is non-returnable. Thankfully for me, they didn't check the box on the back informing me of such policy, so I was able to return the mattress and frame without any issue.
Frame alone was over $4K.
Bought a Casper for $800 and it is considerably more comfortable than the air mattress I returned.

Wife and I went shopping for one and trying to talk ourselves into pulling the trigger. Price tag makes us hesitant but the mattress felt great in store. I swear it takes me 2hrs in the morning before my back starts to loosen up due to our current crappy mattress.

Wait for a sale (they'll probably have one Memorial Day weekend), and then finance on the sleep number credit card. No interest for 36 mo. I think we pay about $70/month on ours.
My sleep number is currently at a 55-60, but that's because I'm pregnant and need a firmer mattress. I'll go back down to 35/40 after the baby is born.
