A maid made all the food. So not much.

My grandmothers weren’t good cooks. Best I could hope for was a trip to Piccadilly.

A lot of this is my mom's, some my Mamaw's. My mom is in her 80's so doesn't make a lot of this stuff anymore.

Chicken and dumplings. The old homemade kind with rolled out strips.

Rice and Gravy. With a roast and grease gravy cooked a long time on the stove. It's just not the same with a crock pot.

Fresh Coconut cake with a real coconut and 7 minute icing. Mine doesn't turn out the same.

Oh, I left off purple hull peas with sweet tomato relish. Nobody has hardly ever heard of the stuff, much less makes it anymore. The best was made by Sally, my Aunt and Uncle's maid/cook when he ran and lived at LTI.

I did not like either of my grandma’s cooking at all. One made some good syrup pies.

That said, my mom turned out to be a terrific cook. So much so my wife preferred her cooking over her moms and grandmas.

Go figure.

My grandma (mom's mother) used to cook a spaghetti like nobody's business.

Its one of those spaghettis that you compare every spaghetti you eat to.. And nothing seems to come close to it.

My granny (dad's mother) was a widow for my entire life. She didn't cook that much, but she made a pretty good gumbo, but she used to cook liver and onions the most. My dad used to love it so she would cook it for him. It was okay, but not my favorite.

Bacon and eggs in a cast iron skillet and she would make as much bacon as I wanted, so much that from about 13 yes old to late 20s the smell of Bacon made me sick.
Now I love it and can eat it like crazy ! Great Grandma, 4 great grandparents, but 1 Grandma was the best.
Only other time something made me ill was around same age as bacon deal, 13-14, (weekend drunk) I got so sick from Boones Farm and Spinada sp ? (Red Wine) that the smell of red wine made me sick until I was around 30. Now I like it but haven't had a drink this year. Doesn't mean I won't just haven't gone to liquor store.

Mom’s side: Biscuits and deer sausage gravy. Hands down. You could drizzle that gravy on dog shite and I’d seriously consider a small bite.

Dad’s side: not really a meal, but she would make batches of homemade bread and made her own mayhaw and muscadine jelly. We’d toast and butter the bread and put a healthy smear of the jelly on. I can still taste it even though it’s been a few years.

Lost them both this year a few months apart. Thanks for the thread, brought some great memories back

I don't remember my grandmother cooking shite, but she always had a stash of glass-bottled Cokes in the refrigerator and they were good.

Fried chicken or chicken/sausage gumbo.

Wish I was older when she passed because I would have definitely gotten that recipe from her.

She used to flex on her neighbors too. Would cook it with the Windows open

Pan fried breaded veal and baked macaroni but with spaghetti and penne.

Neither Rocky nor Carlo could mess with Grammy, boy. And her house had less roaches too.

When my grandmother passed away, my aunt let us grandchildren have some of her things that were special to us. I love everything she gave me, and among the treasures was MawMaw’s recipe box. It is full of clippings from magazines and newspapers she collected over time. She loved to bake and my favorite treat in the world are her holiday lemon squares.

Yeah, my mother is a fantastic cook. With Granny, you ate her cooking at your own risk. Don't say you weren't warned.
