If we could get a competent mayor and police chief, and pair that (hopefully) with a decent governor Baton Rouge's problems(other than traffic) could disappear in a decade and it could actually grow at a decent pace.

Nah because the public schools are still a lost cause.

If you aren’t willing to step foot in NO, you might as well move to Tx, Tn, or Fl for more jobs, higher pay, and better just about everything except parties. There is a bit of difference in the sense of going to Nola for business reasons vs pleasure. Nola still have the River that is a big economic driver so that will remain and it appears the tourism will at least continue to survive in some aspect.
yeah, they way people talk about moving here is pretty… strange

People have family, friends, jobs they like / pay well, kids already in school, etc.

People have issues with New Orleans, justifiably so, but moving to Houston or Florida isn’t really all that attractive of an option to most people here IMHO

The River isn’t a huge employer anymore and will continue to be less so as more is automated. Yes, tourism will survive because everyone likes coming someplace with seemingly no rules. But still, the point is, why would anyone want to LIVE in a suburb of a city you refuse to go to when better options are available?

I left in November 2019 when my wife was pregnant for Mandeville. I lived in the WHD for 10 years, never had a run-in or issues, and was a huge defender of New Orleans. It has always had issues but being young and having fun, I ignored most. Since I have been gone, I have not missed it. I don't go back nearly as much as I thought I would, and don't care to. I have a sincere hatred for the mayor and DA and have questioned why a lot of friends I made while living there still do. They are naive and pretend it isn't as bad as it is. The last place I lived in the WHD, near Lucy's, had a shooting outside of it and multiple people have been held up or robbed. I pray that the city can get fixed, but I don't have much hope. I never thought I would lose the love I had for New Orleans

Super Bowl power outage told me everything I needed to know. Haven't been back at all since 2015, I think

People living in JP and other surrounding areas can easily avoid the city. I was just curious mainly as it pertains to private schools what were folks breaking point. Is sending kids to CBS or MCA or BM that important that you put up with all the BS that currently you don’t need to in the surrounding parishes.

I feel it is pretty easy to avoid the restaurant and general leisure activities if you are so inclined.

I hear you. I’m just saying many of the corporate office that once resided in Nola have moved to suburbs as well. That being said A lot of people live near where they work for convenience. People who live near the beach do so specifically to go to the beach as a leisure activity. I just think it is a slightly different situation.

At first glance I read it that you named your first child Mandeville.

Right? Architecture may be generic suburban, but actual culture comes from the people. There's more genuine New Orleans culture in StB and JP than there has been in Orleans parish for a couple decades now. As far as food, there's plenty of great restaurants in surrounding parishes (It's the same frickin' people, just with more desire to save on taxes and not be robbed).

West St Tammany is a downright lovely place to live if you are over 35, married with kids, and have a real job. A lot of the restaurants are making their way over here too. Just ate at Felix's on 190 the other day. Was delicious. There's a Mandina's on Hwy 22. , Plenty of other establishments started by people who used to work at or own eateries on the South shore. Pat's Rest a While gives you great food while sitting out overlooking Lake Pontchartrain.

The suburbs/exurbs are just fine and very liveable and enjoyable without Orleans Parish.

I've already reached a breaking point. I don't go into Orleans Parish unless absolutely necessary.
The interstate shootings are particularly troubling in addition to everything else.

I dont have kids, thats the only reason i havent left already, but im moving at the end of may.

On the other hand, one of my buddies has two young kids and they live uptown. he sends me videos of vagrants stealing his packages, his wifes car was stolen out of their driveway. i dont understand how the frick they still live there.

The word on the street is the police Chief in Baton Rouge is on the clock. If things don’t turn around, he’s gone by the end of the year.

For a lot of people it is that important. They make enough money so their kids can have the right friends, not associate with the wrong ones, and stack the deck to win championships.

That's not true, they only have enough staff to cover the occupied beds, there are empty beds

exactly.

I have a bunch of family on the NS, who swears they aren’t coming to NOLA again and talk about what a shithole it is. Yet here we are at Mardi Gras and they’re posting their Mardi Gras photos and fleurty girl shirts.

NOLA is a maddening place, and I moved to the burbs for the same reason as many as you. But I will still go into Nola and want to see a successful nola. Big cities across the country are going haywire right now and unfortunately for many of us that’s where we work. So it’s not like there’s a ton of alternatives.

Another Katrina or a violent crime event against someone in my family.

Absent that very little. For better or worse I’ve built a business here. My wife has built a business here. A move away from New Orleans would be a major pay cut.

And despite its problems living in New Orleans is still fantastic for us. Last weekend I took my daughter to swim class and ran into a judge I know. After swim class we stopped at grocery and my daughter held up traffic pushing her tiny cart in the parking lot. The person waiting in his car for us to cross was a friend. I went to a Zulu ball on Saturday and a pelican game yesterday. Mardi Gras is the next several weekends. No city in America better combines small town feel with big city entertainment like New Orleans.

I do worry about when my kids are slightly older. This city is wonderful for young kids and nothing but pitfalls and vice for teenagers.

Not going to restaurants is one thing. Not sending your kid to your alma mater that you love is another thing. Push come to shove, there is not much of a difference in quality of private school education in OP vs surrounding parishes.
