I'm also interested in hearing which social problems today grew from the 60's, and how and why you think that.

I think it's silly to ignore that major social problems arose from the 60's. Nothing in history is without its trade-offs, and the 60's certainly had a lot of them.

Specifically,
- the beginning of the disintegration of the nuclear family, especially in the African-American community
- an exponentially higher rate of hardcore drug use and abuse
- a hyper-individualism that can be poisonous in certain forms

That's without getting into the political problems like the destruction of the legitimacy of and trust in political leadership and the radical violence that started tearing into the social fabric. While the decade peaked at Woodstock, the future of the movement was precipitated at Altamont. The 70's were a really shitty decade for this country.

The theme of mad men is this country slipping from the idyllic panacea of the 50s to the cess pool that we have today

I think the response you'll get from those who disagree with this is that the War on Drugs was the cause of many of these problems.

What they forget is that the War on Drugs was much more of a response to, rather than a cause of, most of the problems that the changes in the 60's begot.

The murder rate had already doubled between 1962 and 1970 when the WoD kicked off in earnest. The out-of-wedlock birth rate was already spiraling out of control, as were the drug abuse rates (especially for the harder drugs like coke and heroin).

I tend not to think the 50's were these halcyon days of yore, even in white suburbia, but it is undeniable that some of the cultural changes of the 60's had major negative impacts on American society. The data alone bears that out.

If you believed the media and history books, you'd actually think JFK was a great president.

Should have elected Goldwater in ‘64.

I recall Buddy Roemer being interviewed and talking about the 64 election. He said he was warned that if he voted for Goldwater, we'd be in a ground war in Vietnam within a year. He then stated that he voted for Goldwater and sure enough, we were in a ground war in Vietnam by the end of 65.

Shows the true colors of its fans.

Women could be denied academic scholarships or admission to college simply for being women. K-12 segregation lasted throughout the decade. Conscription was government policy. The environment was trashed to the point that rivers caught fire.

But muh drugs and promiscuity so it's a great decade.

Nazi socialists control the media, huh?

Can I get a list of these nazi socialists? TIA.

I don't believe either but I think he was a pretty decent one. Martyrdom can propel one from decent to great, I suppose.

One thing he definitely was NOT? A proponent of peace. He was a full on Cold Warrior and ran as one.
