When sorting out Irish ancestors you need some approximate arrival dates. Much of the Irish history we get is about the potato famine mass Irish immigration 1845-55. Most were Catholic.

Your southern Scotch-Irish ancestors, they likely arrived around 1750 and came from what is now Northern Ireland. The English settled many Scots there to work plantations. Many families mixed surnames and DNA with the local Irish then moved on to the North America frontier due to land availability. Most were farmers and Protestant.

I’m all Northern Europe except for a titillating 5% west African. Thats my favorite part of me.

It apparently depends on Ancestry’s updates.

Did the initial test in 2017. It updates periodically and it swung from 40% Irish to 40% Scottish over time.

Rough breakdown now is:

Scotland 40%
Ireland 25%
England 20%
Northwestern France 15%

Certain gene variants correlate with geographic ancestry. If you look at enough of them, the correlations get stronger. So it's not a question of gene variant A being "African" or not. It's a question of the geography of variant A of one gene that appears with variant B of another gene that appears with variant D of another that appears with variant A of another etc. Any of those specific variants might appear anywhere but the likelihood of them appearing together narrows things down.
