What is the story with Vidor Texas?

Spinoff from the outsiders thread--there seems to be quite a story with Vidor Texas. I have only been to Texas once, and my trip took me through there. I had lunch at the whataburger in Vidor and thought that it was a rather unremarkable and somewhat run-down place.

What am I missing? Can Texas baws bring me up to speed?

On a side note, I liked Beaumont. It has a cool downtown area, almost frozen in the early 20th century. Texas has never struck me as a vacation destination, I guess that's why I have never really been there despite living fairly close to it.

Last I heard was that someone was murdered there and some Vidor higher ups refused to investigate/prosecute.

It's known as the most openly racist city. They even conveniently cut the cable (AKA had a technical difficulty) when CNN was airing a story on how racist the city was years ago.

Vidor used to be a sundown town with KKK ties a long time ago. Couple that with the Jasper Texas dragging years ago and people are still scared of it based purely on reputation.

I feel the same way at times

Country Texans are cool but not like a lot of those towns are tourist destinations.

This sounds like a myth.

But yeah, the town has a reputation and none seem to dispute it.

Place known mainly for the KKK. Many years ago there was a guy in Lafayette named Darrell Flinn with a public access tv show on Acadiana Open Network where he'd dress in his outfit and burn crosses live on the air. I believe he moved to Vidor at some point to continue his "work" there.

You visited the part of Texas that is virtually part of SW Louisiana.

Interesting, I didn't know any of this. I honestly thought I was getting off the interstate into the ghetto--maybe just a different kind of ghetto

There are a lot of myths surrounding Vidor. The reputation is earned but exaggerated as it's not what it used to be. The KKK basically no longer exists and there are different races now living in Vidor including blacks, Indians/Asians, Mexicans, etc

Is there still racism there? Yes of course but probably no worse than the racism we see from Dems in CA or NY.

I do remember that when they built Government housing in Vidor and put a fence around it the locals allegedly called it their zoo.

In my town (not Vidor) the whistle at the volunteer fire department used to blow every evening at 6 PM. My mother would tell me they were testing it, but I've since read that sundown towns had signals like that to tell black people they had better be off the street by then. So I wonder.
