I wear out the leather soles too quick. I always have my AE's resoled in the tempest sole until they discontinued it.

Honestly, if it's not a goodyear welt, it's not a quality shoe. That's the only way you're going to get something that'll last as long as you want it to.

You see this 100% of the time in threads about older brands. I always wonder if it's actually true, or if it's just a psychological fallacy
I inherited a golf bag from someone wealthy who passed away. Tucked inside was a brand new pair of J&M spiked golf shoes from the early 80's probably. They're beautiful half white leather half brown alligator. I wore them once. Most uncomfortable shoe I've put on my foot. Could've just needed some breaking in, but I think we've come a long way technologically.
Not to be a snob, but I can't stand my 3 pair of AE's either. I bought different lasts trying to find one that worked and they all rub my baby toe something fierce. I buy Ferragamo when I find a sale.

What is the reputation of Johnston and Murphy in the shoe world?
Good designs, not necessarily great quality.
I used to be a J&M customer, but since switching to Magnanni, Allen Edmonds and Mezlan (most comfortable dress shoe I own), I won't go back.

These are leather with a little rubber. They are the only JM shoes I've liked enough to buy. I sometime feel like they are to bulky compared to AE or Magnanni.

Somewhere above Puma but below LA Gear

10 / 10. Been sporting the same pair of loafers for over 4 years. Had the soles replaced 3 times. Good stuff.

How much does it cost to replace soles?
Posted on 1/22/16 at 6:37 pm to GRTiger
$70 at the place I get it done
Rubber soles are for poors and people who wear ties and khakis to weddings

Well I go to a guy that puts these nice wooden Italian soles on. He charges around 60 - 70. The Asians at the dry cleaners will do it for 20 but you don't want those.
Eta: this is after its worn past the heel into a certain part. If you just replace the lower heel it's around 30 I believe. I have an over pronation so into through them quicker.

So you've spent about $350-400 on that pair of shoes over 4 years, including purchase price and sole replacement?

I'm an everyday dress shoe wearer. I wear down leather soles quickly. Also depends on the thickness and quality of leather you replace them with

I bought the shoes in August of 2011. Get the soles replaced every two years. I wear them to work every other day. I have had the soles replaced twice. If I said 3x originally I was mistaken. Original cost was around 160 - 180. So around 320 on a pair of shoes I wear all the time over a period of four and a half years.

I had a pair. They "clacked" when I walked on the marble floors at work. Sweet.

I think this is what causes the discrepancy about shoes (and other products) not being made like they used to.
Most shoes can be worn for anything right out of the box. They are much more comfortable, and tend to be more functional.
Older shoes had to be broken in, and were really horrible until they hit that sweet spot. However, these more ridged materials allowed them to last longer.
It's quite an interesting trade off.

I am a JM junkie. I like their styles. Good shoes and I think they are very comfortable. The xc4 soles are nice. Cheaper than AE. To me it is more about what brand fits your personality, taste, and useful life. Find the brand that suits you. I only buy from the jm store in Lakeside. It is possible that the shoes sold in department stores are of lower quality than the stores itself, as I bought a pair from a dept. Store and they sucked.

I've been a loyal customer for 15 years. Have a pair of AE but prefer the JM fit.....

Got pair of the kreeser gore boots for Christmas.
Italian leather.
Badass.

Well past its glory days as far as quality is concerned.
How is this? I've had two pairs I wear at least once a week and have had them for 8 years with no issues, so I bought two more pair about 2 years ago and no issues with them.
Has the quality really gone down or are people just saying that more? How would we know? If J&M's aren't lasting AT LEAST 5 years then maybe so, I just haven't experienced that.
