re: What is the point of a debate?

I recommend the Munk debates to show a good representation of civil discourse. The crowd votes how they feel about a topic before the debate begins, two sides go back and forth over policy issues, and another poll is taken at the end to show how people's ideas may have moved. This was one of the better ones on meida bias where the audience's preconceived notions were flipped. Douglas Murray and Matt Taibii against Malcolm Gladwell and a NYT columnist. I would have linked the Munk debates directly, but they disabled playback.

To gain knowledge one must change their own opinions.
Simply lacking to ever change your mind on a topic is a very ignorant way to live.

You can say what you want about his debate abilities but calling him far right is just straight up retarded.

Debates aren’t always to convince the other person so much as it’s an attempt to convince the audience.

Calm down. I simply called him what a quick research of the interwebs labeled him. FTR, I agree with him on almost everything.

Why would anyone here want to be able to do that?
The problem is the moderate left barely still exists.

Arguably, people still think they can change people's point of views with classical persuasion, but now it's mostly seen as just performing an art in a way. People couldn't care less about facts nowadays.

Way back in the early 80s when high schools had debate teams, we would study the art of rhetoric and factual discourse. You were given a list of debatable topics and had to research's both sides of the argument. You never knew whether you would cover pro or con until the moderator assigned you a position. That is the true value of debate. To be able to weigh the facts on both sides objectively.

far right
I keep seeing the term "far right" associated with German Socialists from the 1930's.
But obviously Socialists are leftists. Can you clear up your meaning?

With Marxism being so hot these days, the far right now starts around what we historically called the moderate left.

Nearly all of them are in the mainstream media. The mainstream media makes up 90% liberal democrats. You will find them there working in television, news, a lot of dying platforms.

I always thought debates were for nerds. I remember this guy I knew at the time was telling me and some other people he wasn't going out anywhere that night.. It was during the campaign of George Bush's 2nd term. So 2004? Anyway this dude was like "tonight is the presidential debate" and we all gave him a hard time about it..
People telling him shite like "watching presidential debates is how you definitely lock down pussy
", but now, especially on youtube people call out each other "I challenged them to a debate. Tell him to debate me or shut up".. I have to remind myself that is the norm these days. It doesn't make someone a "nerd who sucks" if they want to debate.

quote:
Nazism is a far-right fascist ideology characterized by fervent antisemitism, scientific racism, and social Darwinism, aiming to establish an Aryan "master race" (Herrenrasse) and achieve Lebensraum (living space). It rejects liberal democracy, communism, and equality, favoring a dictatorship based on the Führerprinzip (leader principle).

There is no room for them anymore. The John Breaux’s of the world are basically gone forever. The Democrats forced them out with the nut jobs running the party.
