If the parents can afford it and want to, why not? Maybe those adult children don't have the same level of financial stability that their parents have and might otherwise skip taking a vacation because they're still working their way up the career ladder, trying to pay off student loans, saving to buy a house, or have expenses for their own young children. Not trashy at all for parents to pay for a vacation to take their kids/grandkids on. Can't put a price tag on quality time with the family.

Actually no, the OT clearly does not think that way, then again it's a Monday so it's better to start these threads in the middle of the week or on Thursday for a good non bipartisan thread

I see it as a pay it forward thing. When my parents and I go see my sister in NM/KS, they pay my way. When I have kids, I'll probably try to pay their way, but hope they pick up some of the burden once they get married/have kids. That being said, if I have grandkids and they take a trip to see me, it will be completely on my dime.

Never happened to me but perfectly reasonable if typical to some instances I've seen. If it's one of these, age 32, living in the parents garage apartment, "yeah go ahead, take your European vacation while I'm suffering with the anxiety attacks, left here all alone as usual", type weasel a free vacation out of parent's "guilt". NO... loser trash...

Most people won't pay a dime in inheritance, estate, or income taxes based on said inheritance in Louisiana, not that I have any advanced knowledge of this.

Don't see what the problem is since their money will eventually be yours anyway. You're essentially spending your inheritance.

Any money spent on enabling family to make memories is money well spent imo.

I'm kind of in the middle of the two spectrums right now where I am paying for my kids and also parents (MIL) to go on vacation. Hell I pick up the tab both ways when we go to dinner as well. We just got back yesterday from a week long beach vacation. I rented a 3 bedroom condo, paid for all of the groceries, alcohol, beach service, dinners out, and anything else that came up. My youngest son is 14 and my oldest son is 24 and just had a baby so he and his wife are just getting started. It was worth it because we were able to spend extended time with my new granddaughter. My Mother-in-Law came as well. I don't mind paying for her because she used to take us on vacation when we were just starting out and couldn't afford to go on vacation. Now I am doing well and she is retired so it is time for me to pay it back. We have invited my parents in the past but they never want to go on long trips but my Dad never refuses to let me pick up the tab at dinner whenever we visit and go out to dinner ever couple of weeks.

When you look back at those times that you spent together I guarantee that nobody is going to recall how the check was split up, just that you all had a great time together. There's no justification for passing up time together due to weirdness over finances. Generosity is never trashy and accepting assistance from family isn't either.

My kids are single and in their 20's. We still take them on a trip a year with us if they want to go. I'm paying for a place anyway.

It's the things you do and the experiences you have that matter and that are lasting.

Is this the first time the OT has had a united front in declaring something NOT trashy?

Not enough info. Adult doing what the heck they want with their own money is reasonable to me, in general.

My father has paid for my wife , kids and I to go to Disney with him on more than one occasion. Granted he just covered the room, tickets and few sit down meals. Who am I to argue with the way he wants to spend his money. TBH I'll probably be the same way when I'm older.

First World Problem

No big deal any way it might go, figure it out amongst the family members.

The OP's mom pays and pays on occasion.
