In the US, I think Key West probably disappoints more people than any other highly desired travel location. The right person loves KW, for many, a tropical paradise without beaches, with zero concern about customer service ends up a disappointment.

You didn’t do key west the right way

The keys are awesome if you want to escape.

I would say Broken Bow, OK.

We were definitely disappointed with our trip there. For the same drive, Arkansas is much better

Seriously what draws people there? Any time I see it mentioned I do some initial research and immediately say "but why"

Many "overrated" travel destinations are simply due to poor research/prep and expectations

30A gets a lot of hate, mainly I feel the overratedness is the price and the amount of people at high season. Most will praise the "shopping and dining" but there isn't enough to cater to the crowds now. They need 3x the amount of restaurants in Rosemary to handle the people there in the summer.

100%

After working in the industry for years, most people are too lazy or dumb to do their own research. They just take the advice of others.

Exactly. Like I posted earlier, the haters dont actually plan to do anything and just walk the strip.

If I wanted to ski, hike, or go to a beach I would just go to another state lol.

The correct answer is Cairo, Egypt

Really? I don’t see the world flocking there but it’s a neat place for a short drive from LA or TX.

Having been to all 3 recently, if I’m driving 6 hours I would choose Austin or 30A over Broken Bow 10 times out of 10.

I thought the Broken Bow response was some kind of inside joke.

My wife (no pics) and I went for a week last year and I thoroughly enjoyed it. A shorter stay would’ve probably been better, but I would go back for a long weekend in a second.

I liked the vibe there, and I liked walking around and day drinking virtually all day. Went watch some live music a couple nights while we were there; one at sloppy Joe’s and another a a much smaller place. Enjoyed them both.

Also went into a couple of bars that seemed to be more local type bars and had fun there as well.

I didn’t have high expectations and knew there weren’t any beaches there except some “crappy” ones. We have a camp in grand isle so I have plenty of access to a less than stellar beach.

On a week day nothing was packed and the crowds were minimal. Drinks are expensive AF anywhere you go so keep that in mind. Never felt unsafe at anytime like you could in NO.

All that being said I could definitely see how KW is overrated for most, especially anyone with the wrong expectations.

Maui. Brown, dry, tourist-ridden shithole. Everything is an hour drive away
Mount Haleakala, Molikini, hiking through West Maui. And that is just what to do when you aren't just walking to the beech or enjoying a local restaurant.

did all that. biking down Haleakala was one of the highlights of the trip for sure, but Molikini was super lame after scuba diving the day before

You could do everything you needed to do in Maui in 2 days

The Riverwalk. It comes in second to Bourbon Street for trashiness.

We take the golf cart to eat great Mexican food in south town barrios (an area that might spook tourist, but it's mostly harmless in daylight hours).

I see gentrification happening in some of these areas. I’m always conflicted on that. It forces out locals, jacks up COL, etc. That’s a high price to pay (literally) for some newer construction and lots of coffee shops

I mean, if his end game is to paint the Riverwalk in the same light as Bourbon, he will fail.

Fine, he found a case where a pissed off dude shot some people in 2020. I guess I should have said you are “much less likely to get shot there than on Bourbon.”

Either way, I’ll take my chances there, on the Strip, Beale Street, Broadway in Nashville, downtown Detroit, subway in NYC, and amidst the bums in Seattle before I choose Bourbon.
