80s were the first decade of real advertising/marketing taking over, so it takes a hit. But it had better technology and toys than previous decades. When I say toys, I mean everything from Dirt Bikes to Video Games,, etc. Arcades, the best generation of kids movies.
The 1970s probably had the most overall freedom, though.
The 1990s was a mix of a lot of things and is my teen decade. It was great, but we saw a lot of problems as well.
If I had to vote overall, probably the 80s. But that freedom in the 70s, and freedom from everything, is pretty tough to beat.

quote:If you say so. It was awesome for a lot of us. I just looked up the suicide stats and the teen suicide rate increased from around 13 per 100k in the 80's to 13.6 per 100k in 94 (the worst year). Not good but hardly a dark cloud over the decade. It's also worth noting that the rates began to climb in the 80's and dropped like a rock in the mid 90's. Columbine actually took place several years into that drop. Now, this is based on my 2 minutes of research but if you have a link that refutes it I'll concede. I think you're overstating your case.
Columbine was a culmination of a tough decade for teens.

Why did this (potential) great thread turn into a suicide thread????????

To me any time from mid 70s to late 90s was pretty damn awesome.
70s had freedom but a suffering economy. But overall a great decade to grow up in.
80s was prolly beat mix of freedom, exploding tech and good economy. A really really great decade, but it was very violent overall. Good news was it wasn't plastered in your face.
90s really still had a lot of the innocence of the 70-80s, but better economy and even more of an explosion in technology. But was even more violent, especially the first half. But still got to play outside with freedom and go whenever as a teenager. Until 97 kids could still drive at 15 so still had that freedom as a freshman.
To me things really started changing in the mid 2000s and went downhill for kids then. Imo gotten better for adults, especially college educated adults, but kids have way less freedom. Parents that grew up in the late 80s and 90s hover over their kids not letting them have the same type of freedom they expierenced. Alot of that comes from social media and cell phone technology becoming so big.

The 60's were as chaotic as today with all the protests going on over Nam and Civil Rights issues.
I'd opt for the 50's, but then again, I'm white, so there's that. Black in the 50's would have sucked.
Riots everywhere, the South was a freaking mess with bombings/dogs/fire hoses/buses/marches. It's like the entire country was in upheaval and the hatred between American's at a fever pitch.

1980s, followed by 1990s.
The 1990s teens had 9/11 and the subsequent wars to fight, but they didn't know it yet.

i was a teen in the the 70s and wouldn't trade it for any other decade.
the instant access to porn these days is great. but, i would have never left the house as a teen.

I'm sure being an 80's teen was awesome but that means I would have missed out on probably, imo, the greatest decade to be a kid in America. Awesome toys (GI Joe, Transformers, Voltron, etc...). BMX was big. Little league was $25 for the season and pretty much everyone played. We had Atari and Nintendo but cell phones were still an expensive novelty and internet was unknown to most people. We still played unsupervised all day and came home when the streetlights turned on. Movies were amazing.
I got my first cell phone after I graduated from college. I did have a beeper though

We didn't have internet until around my freshman year at LSU.

I would say the 1970s
