How did this guy make it to a runoff? Were there just several “not well known” candidates that were able to get just enough votes to force a runoff?

Ascension Parish is a very, very interesting place politically speaking.

The old folks in the parish who have trust issues with anyone younger than 60 voted for Painter. As did much of Donaldsonville. The big money was behind Painter. The heavy hitters in Donaldsonville were all behind Painter.

As someone else said, the "good ole boy" system in AP is stronger than most realize.

The legend of Murphy Painter goes back a long time...
before any of us could even pick up a baseball. Back to a place called Ascension Parish.
It all started about, mmm, 20 years ago, when thieves kept stealing junk from Donandsonville junkyard. So Mr. Harold, the guy that used to own the place, got him this new deputy from the town. Harold fed him whole sides of beef...and deptuy was turned loosein the junkyard. And the deputy was grateful.
And so, in a few weeks, the deputy grew into a Beast. And he grew big, and he grew mean...so that he could protect the parish with only one thing on his mind: To kill everyone that broke the law. And he did, and he liked it a lot!
Murphy Painter was the most perfect deputy that ever lived. A true killing machine.
But after a while, the FBI started getting phone calls from people...
reporting all the missing thieves, the ones that Murphy had killed. It added up to about 120...173 guys. They never found a single body. Not one. Some people say they all got away. But we all know what really happened. Murphy ate them. He ate them bone and all.
Murphy was too good at his sheriff deputy job, so the govener said he had to retired.
My grandpa, Squidman Palledorous, was govener back then. He ordered Mr. Harold to turn his parish into a fortress...and chain up Murphy and put him under the house...where he could never get out to eat children and stuff.
That's where he's been for 20 years

Yea, Murphy Painter is a fricking scum bag. I tried telling folks on the political board this multiple times and each time his supporters came out to bash me and downvote.

Look who looks like the fool now, dumbasses. His supporters blindly supported him no matter what.

quote:

They didn't believe you because you are a tool. The heavy hitters went after Murphy with big money and all they got want a big bill and lost an expensive counter suit. When will you people realize that if you investigate the big politicians you'll end up like a former friend of the Clintion's. Suicided

Man, I really triggered you with my post there, didn't I? You can keep blaming Painter's (your) legal problems (which always seem to pop up, by the way) on political enemies but he (you) shelled out a bit of money in a civil suit by one his (your) accusers after he (you) were acquitted. There was at least some level of guilt there. And now he's (you're) on tape discussing his (your) efforts to assist in covering up multiple child rapes and a vehicular homicide back when he (you) was/were a deputy in the parish.

Bottom line is this -- about 70% of this parish knew Painter is a dirty mother fricker and the writing was on the wall with the vote numbers. Even the democrat running for the position came out and endorsed his opponent. Everyone with any sense whatsoever knows how important it was to keep Murphy Painter a private citizen.

Agreed seems like a good guy that actually wants to improve AP

He will only be as successful as the clowns on the parish council allow him to be by working with him. CC is not one of the "locals", he's a "move in" and the locals probably won't work with him.

In the mid eighties I was pulled over, for nothing, in Ascension parish. I was told over the loudspeaker to get out of my car. I was almost 6'3, about 220, and doing 5 days a week in the gym. As soon as I got out I was told to just stand there while he called for backup. He was scared. When about 3 more cars arrived, I handed him my license, registration, and insurance.

I was compliant and non-argumentative until he told me I had run the red light. I said that it was green, that it had not even turned yellow yet. After a few minutes of trying to get me to confess, they all huddled, then decided to let me go. The initial cop was an a-hole throughout.

I mentioned this to some guys I knew from AP a few days later. They all told me that he is a well known a-hole. They said he goes to the bars, gets drunk, picks fights, and has anybody that kicks his arse arrested. He was well known back then and nobody had anything good to say about him.

This was 1985 and he was on a police motorcycle. He seems to have made CCD soon after. He seemed about 40 then so he must be fairly old now. This is the first time I have heard his name since then.

TLDR: Murphy Painter was an a-hole to me, for no reason, in 1985.

ETA: I have been informed that Charlie Painter was the motorcycle cop, therefore the a-hole. To my knowledge, I have never met Murphy.

Yea, it's an interesting place. People love their ditches and roads with no shoulders.
As a suburb, the place should be/is financially loaded and they don't have money for infrastructure.

They use it all to build parks that no one frequents.

Gave your post an upvote, that was a good read.

But I’m curious, what do you weigh now, about four bills?

Transcript from the tapes Pelican Post released of Murphy Painter:

quote:

“When it come time for me to take over after I’d done been shot at, pissed on, beat up and everything else for 15 years, got Harold Tridico through five frickin’ elections; next week whenever we find a friend of ours that raped five girls under the age of 12 years old, and y’all want me to turn my head on that and look the other way.

Or, or, or the sheriff leaves a bar and goes down the road and runs over some poor black guy on a frickin’ motorcycle, and kills him, and then tries to frame some woman for running him off the road. And they hide him out for eight hours ‘til he gets sober to take a frickin’ breath test when the law requires that you got to take a frickin’ uh, uh, you got to take a frickin’ blood test.”

The audio is on Pelican Posts FB page from last Friday.

I was eating lunch in Gonzales and the old guy next to me asks us if we’re from Ascension. We are. So we talk a little about my family which he knew because he’s like ninety. He goes on to suggest we vote for Murphy Painter because he’s a great man and a good friend of his. I look this guy up later and sure as shite, pictures of him and Matassa and people of that good ole boy sort. So I imagine his 20% were the people blindly supporting the old school.

Oh yea, I’d say 75% of the elderly in the parish supported Painter.

I topped out about 265. Last Jan., I was about 255 and a Dr. told me to lose some weight. I lost 35 lbs in a month and am hovering at 220 again. I was almost 6'3 for my Charlie Painter story and am almost 6'2 now. We shrink as we get older.

They don’t want to pay for it. They just want to complain about Baton Rouge traffic. I wouldn’t move to Ascension Parish specifically for the reason you listed above.
