re: What is the best piece of professional advice you’ve gotten from a mentor?

Right before Desert Storm kicked off, our MEU (Marine Expeditionary Unit) commander, Col. Dusty Rhodes, gathered all of us together on the deck of the USS Okinawa. He was a former Vietnam helo pilot with red ink in his logbook so we were expecting a "go win on for the Gipper" speech. He gave us his words of wisdom from his combat experience:

Eat when you can
Sleep when you can
Take a shite when you can

Thus fortified, we went out and flew our missions.

Stick to your dream and believe in yourself. My father.

Once you hit age 40 never pass a bath room.

If you do you will regret it 5 minutes later.

Best advice I got was from an old boss of mine who was good friends with Zig Ziglar....,

"Never enter into a business relationship with a friend unless you're willing to lose that friendship."

No truer words were ever spoken about business relationships and I eventually found out exactly what he meant.

Coach Finstock was a wise man:

"Never get less than 12 hours sleep. Never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city. Never get involved with a woman with a tatoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese."

Trust no one, suspect everyone

Trust but verify.

If you go into a meeting, task, confrontation, or project expecting it to be difficult or bad things to happen, they are much more likely to. You manifest your reality. Be prepared for the worst, but always expect the best.
