My employer is matching donations, but it can't be a church.

Thanks

I would think Red Cross, but I would wait to see what others say.

pick one of the local churches you see delivering food/supplies or actually helping people with their houses

so you know the money will stay local and you can see you donation going to work...

EDIT: Didnt read about churchh
Can try the local food bank.... was hit hard with floods itself....

Then I hope your employer likes having about 50% of his donation skimmed off the top and to not go to the actual victims.

Your employer scared of church?
Just donate some $ to a church and forget your employer.

Donate a day of your time to help somewhere of your choosing.

Get your boss to match it with an extra day of vacation later.

Physical labor is still needed.

I would say Baton Rouge Area Foundation, they are doing a Louisiana Flood Relief Fund.

Why can't it be a church?

Baton Rouge Food Bank would be a better choice than Red Cross

I'm not sure why it can't be a church. I donated to the BR Foundation to benefit the cop's family earlier this month. Now I see they have a flood relief fund and I'll donate to that. They get a good rating from Charity Navigator

I've busted my share of sheetrock in the last week, still a lot of clean up and packing to do.

Thanks

I'm outside of the majorly affected areas, so I haven't seen any of the recovery first hand. So, I'm curious - what is the beef with the Red Cross?

Nobody wants to admit it, but the Red Cross is THE group when it comes to disasters such as this.

At the end of the day, they are giving people a place to live, and food to eat - which is something you do NOT want your local government doing.

Usually corporate entities will match if it's not for "religious purposes". A designated "disaster relief" contribution to a church will usually be allowable by IRS guidelines as long as isn't for the benefit of any one person.

That's the legal/ tax angle. Your employer may have their own separate limitations though. You may want to check into it.

And they ship these volunteers in from out of state, and end up taking up Cots or Hotel rooms, and then eat the food thats donated to the refugees. But when locals try and volunteer, Red Cross turns them away. frick Red Cross and everything about them.

I donated to Second Harvest of Baton Rouge. Fingers crossed that most if not all of the money goes to those who need it.
