2nd Gen. The Toyota vehicles made in the early 90's were the high water mark for the brand. After this time, the vehicles were designed to a price. They might still last well, they just didn't have the total level of design features and quality relative to the era. Decontenting was the term used as the major brands (Mercedes was the worst of this time) would pull higher end design items the customer wouldn't see, like liquid filled engine mounts, to keep the price at a certain point.

A 2nd gen 4Runner was built like no other and held a place in the market it didn't top again, IMO.

I have owned 2,3,4 and currently have a 2016 limited for the wife. Easily one of my favorite vehicles.

I had one that the top was removable. It was a awesome feature. You just needed a big place to put the top and three people to help take it off

I had a 3rd gen that I bought new in 2003, the 4.7 V8 engine. Had it for 13 years, never any trouble from it. Paid $32k new, sold it for $15k to a friend.

He's put almost 60K on it in 2 year. Bulletproof.

IDK, my wife had an 04’ Sport with the V8 4.7. Really was impressed with that one. Years later, got her a 13’ and I am not as impressed. Nicer looking and more “gadgets”, but it is built like a tin can. You get that boomy, resonant sound when you shut the doors etc. So far, we haven’t had any mechanical issues so I’m extremely happy about that. Had one window motor and one power lock servo shite the bed. Other than that, normal wear items and oil changes. In the grand scheme of things, “Wife happy, life happy”.

I drove a 3rd (1997) for 6 years so I'm partial. I'll hopefully end up driving a 5th (or 6th) in the near future though I don't like it as much.
