As far as looks go, I'd go with 1st, then 5th.
And the newer 5th gen (2014-present) look better than the early 5th gen.
Mine is a 2013 so it's the 5th gen before the facelift and new headlights. I'd have preferred the newer look, but found a great deal. (Not mine, but this style...)

Had a 2003 4WD with the V8.
Drove the hell out of it...but only used the 4WD on occasion (not our hard offroad vehicle)....but the 4WD shift solenoid developed the leak that many had on it at about 100K miles..some posted on different boards they lost theirs at 80K. Bad design of an integrated seal that required the whole assembly be replaced. $6K part. Also the Power steering line routing and amount of power steering lines is a crap design. When you have to replace them due to leaks...that's not cheap either.
My least favorite would be that generation.

I still drive my 1997 4Runner. I’ve been told by more than one mechanic that the 97 and 98 4Runners were the best ever made for durability. To this day you still see them on the road everywhere.

One of the few good looking SUVs left.

I had a 3rd generation V6 SR5 and a 4th generation V8 Sport Edition...Personally, I liked the size of the 3rd generation better. I have a 100 series Landcruiser now, and parked it next to a new 4runner earlier this week. I swear they were about the same size.

Well at least toyo stayed consistent with one thing thru the years...horrible gas mileage.

That $300 you might save a year on getting 2-3 miles less per gallon is well worth it since you wont have to pay a repair man.
3rd Gen here--2002 4Runner Sport-still my favorite vehicle ive ever owned. Often wish I still had it

I love them all. I got a 4th (SR5) my Freshman year in college and 2 years ago I upgraded to a 5th (Limited).
I love them both so much I might not ever buy a different car. I put 200k miles on the old one without an issue. The new one has 120k miles.
As far as looks go:
1
5
3
2
4

I traded in my 3rd gen for a 5th gen a year ago. That 3rd gen is a timeless design. Mine was a 2001 and never had one single issue with it. So far the 5th gen has been perfect--now if I could just keep assholes from dinging my doors.

Mine is the exact same color except its the offroad model with the TRD rims.
So I'm biased but 5 all the way

I had a third and really wanted a first. The third has o2 sensor issues and a tendency to kill cats. But they are one of the easiest running engines ever. Simple old 0w40 will get you 10-15k mile oil changes no problem.
I bought a first, not for me. The stick is uncomfortable to drive in that platform. It begs for a 3.4 swap with an auto. Sold it and got a 1.5 gen xterra.
I test drove a 15 earlier...and it's just too nice for me to thrash it like a 4runner. They just need to gut the interior and put a metal bumper from and rear with a good approach angle.
The 4runner needs the xterra or blazer back. It needs something to keep it grounded in an off-road mentality.
Jeep doesn't cut it.
I'm dying to buy an old 90's Land Crusier and make it my offroad camping vehicle

This is why I will never sell my 2004 Disco. You have give up most of your cargo space to a full tool set but when it does run it cant be beat off-road.

The Toyota vehicles made in the early 90's were the high water mark for the brand.
That can be said for all JDMs.

It’s one of the only SUVs left period. Crossovers don’t count.
