Freestyle gets you there faster. If you get tired you can do breast stroke.

I'm going to presume the OP is serious which I doubt as he said on his back.
A distance swimmer would swim freestyle with a 2 beat kick. That's the most efficient and is what distance swimmers and triathletes would use.

Pretty sure bear gryls did this in one of his episodes and said sidestroke was most efficient for long open water swims.

Freestyle seems to be the defacto most efficient method-
However, SEALs are taught the Combat-stroke.
ETA - Olympic Swimming 1,500 meter participants seems to all use the freestroke. As do all of the 10 km swimmers who compete in open water.

distance swimmers nearly always use the freestyle as it allows to cover long distances while wasting the least amount of energy.

Free style is fastest but takes a lot more out of you (IMO), not to mention reduces your ability to see your surroundings.
Sidestroke isn't much slower when done properly, is much more energy efficient, and you can keep eyes on your target and/or surroundings.
I've done many long distance swims, some requiring side stroke and some requiring free style. Side stroke all day IMO.

Elementary back stroke. Can swim without tiring.

I find freestyle to be most efficient. Breast stroke makes it easier to breathe and see straight, but I'd more tiring on my arms. Backstroke is easy to breathe, but can't see where you're going. Learn to breathe efficiently (blow out underwater, turn head and take air), and freestyle isn't all that tiring. Throw in a sighting stroke every once in a while and it's easy going. And like someone said, don't throw in a sprint kick...two beat, or even no kick. I can swim for miles like that if I had to.

"Freestyle" is a swimming stroke? I thought freestyle meant just that. You can use whatever stroke you want.
As far as the OP...dunno. I can't swim long distances and would never attempt to swim across a lake.

I guess it depends on distance too. A couple hundred yards and I'll do freestyle. A couple miles and I don't even mess with it, just stay sidestroke the whole time.
Then again I was forced to focus on sidestroke for most of my training so I'm biased.

Yes. Freestyle is a swimming stroke. There are variations of the stroke depending on whether it's a sprint, middle distance or long distance swim.

I don't even use my arms when I swim on my back.

The Phelps method, puff puff pass

Breast stroke is the best survival stroke for long distances because you can constantly breath, can have better vision in case of boats and uses the least amount of energy. If you have a spotter or doing this for time then American Crawl. If you are a glutton for punishment go for butterfly. Backstroke is great for short distances but if you are aiming for a specific point on the other side you will get off track every few minutes and you have horrible vision if your trying to avoid boats.

Simple, freestyle is by far the safest way to open water swim and the most logical.

I usually go with boat driver but shotgun works pretty well too.

What makes you say that? In my experience you aren't very aware of your surroundings using free style, in terms of safety. You will tire faster unless you have it perfected as well.
