I get why other people would like it. I'm just not one of those people. I hate crowds and chaos. And I really don't understand king cake. But, it doesn't bother me that other people get so into it. However, it always seems to piss people off if you don't like Mardi Gras. Like you've committed some kind of sin. I just ignored it and go about my life.

I guess I should say I don't understand the excitement over it. I find it bland and boring. Not something I really want to waste calories on. JMO. Not really a fan of cookies or brownies either. Now regular cake is a different story.

Mardi Gras means different things to different people.
It's mainly about sharing good times with friends and family to me. We go to house parties before the parades and walk down to the parades and see friends/neighbors and catch up. The kids enjoy running around and catching stuff and watching the bands and marching groups.
Sometimes there might be an after parade gathering at someones house where we eat gumbo, red beans and rice, etc. Yes, fried chicken is def. a staple on mardi gras day for us, but the two weeks leading up to that day is like I guess a tailgate party of sorts.
Being a member of a nice krewe is a good time. Last night probably 2500 people went to nice balls for Endymion and Nyx.
The krewe I ride with is a year round event as are most. We have a monthly meeting with food and drinks. We have a summer time dance, a fall coronation, and a big party before we ride, as well as a small march/parade a month or so before mardi gras where we go about a mile through the quarter and have a blast.
We also have a family friendly party at the den where the kids can climb on the floats, etc.
We also go visit a nursing home or two for one of our events and pass out goodies and make the old timers feel good.
And then there is the ride. Such a damn good time to be next to my buddies every year and seeing thousands and thousands of people screaming for your stuff the whole way down the route.
And yes, to some trash, it's all about getting fcked up on Bourbon street and looking for titties.

In my late 30’s and grew up in NOLA. I’ll try to explain even though I feel this is a troll.
As a kid it was all about collecting beads, cups, trinkets, etc. having fights with brothers with spears and silly string.
As I got to High School it was about time off from school and sneaking some alcohol with friends.
College it was all about the parties and getting drunk ALL day for several days straight.
After college it was a reason to get back in touch with friends and distant relatives who moved away and have a good time.
Now I appreciate the foods/ cookouts associated with the event. And I’m actually liking the parades more than I ever did. The floats are starting to become works of art and the marching bands are damn impressive.
It’s just a general good time where most people in the city are in a festive mood.... and I’m starting to appreciate watching the kids have fights with spears and silly string. Start the cycle over

I usually go out of town for Mardi Gras. I’ve never understood the allure of going out into drunken mobs of people to catch plastic beads.

i'm not a big fan of mardi gras unless im at a house on the parade route.
