Say what you will about New York or Seattle or LA but they all have pretty huge industries that involve companies that most Americans use every day.

What does Portland provide? I know Nike is out of Oregon but it’s not really associated with Portland is it? I’m not trying to shite on the city because I know plenty of people who enjoy visiting there and I’m sure you have a few bad actors ruining a cool city that likely has a silent majority of cool people living there.

But what is what drives their economy like a New York or Chicago and what do they provide the rest of the country? Hell at least New Orleans has ports as well as proximity to oil and gas and pretty solid tourism.

ETA: people have really misunderstood the point of this post. I’m looking for legit areas as to why it’s a good place to live and what it provides. I have really no idea. I’ve never even met someone from Portland in my life so how would I know? A lot of people have provided good answers. I don’t know why me asking what’s good about Portland somehow makes people assume I think there’s nothing good about it. All I know about it before this thread is Voodoo donuts and they have lots of craft beer.

The Nike and U.S Adidas hq are here. Also wine and weed. It's a pretty small city compared to most of the east coast.

I just saw that Beaverton is basically a Portland suburb. So that’s a pretty big one.

Nike
Intel
Columbia
Lots of Silicon Valley tech companies have branches up there. It’s considered the Silicon Rainforest.
The Timber Industry is massive up there along with plenty of milk and dairy.
Some of the best coffee and beer in the US is found in Portland.

You can shite on Portland but it’s a really cool city. For a city of only 500k, it has some pretty cool identity and features

spent some time in Eastern Oregon, which is more like Montana than Portland, anyhow they have wheat fields around the wind farms and they use this "biomass" (which is really the porta pottys dried and cooked to eliminate pathogens) for fertilizer....HOLY shite IT WAS PUNGENT

Guys there said you get used to it...said the yield is triple what manure is, which is being used for biofuel for power generation.

also, the city water is grey water filtered....enjoy

3rd largest port on the west coast.
Home to Nike, Adidas US, Columbia Sportswear, and LaCrosse.
Beer and wine in the region.
Also still has a pretty big steel industry apparently.

Lol

The city's marine terminals alone handle over 13 million tons of cargo per year, and the port is home to one of the largest commercial dry docks in the country.[134][135] The Port of Portland is the third-largest export tonnage port on the west coast of the U.S., and being about 80 miles (130 km) upriver, it is the largest fresh-water port.[133] The city of Portland is the largest shipper of wheat in the United States,[136][137] and is the second-largest port for wheat in the world.

Also not mentioned is Portland’s tech hub. Intel has 15,000 employees there, which spawned a sizable eco system and labor pool.

I agree....kinda like the french quarter with its eclecticism

food is underated, full nude strip clubs and sex workers are allowed, weather is amazing in the summer, outdoors is unsurpassed, weed is legal

that being said, I wouldnt raise a family there if you gave me a free house
