What is origin of “Germans”?

I know it means that something has already been posted but how and/or why did that become the term used on this website (or others as well, I only frequent this website so I can’t speak for other forums)?
I’ve been a lurker around here since 2008 and a poster since 2013, so I’ve seen the term used quite often and never thought about what the hell it actually means until recently.
I did a little research but couldn’t find the answer so I was hoping one of you baws would know the answer.

When someone would post old news, people would reply with something like “did you hear Japan bombed Pearl Harbor”
To which people would reply with the quote from Animal House “was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor”
Which morphed into just “Germans”
