But why is it so much worse now that it’s to the point so many kids become basically paralyzed, unable to function, and require professional help to deal with it?
Is it worse or just more recognized now?

Because of social media you see it more

That is the case with many mental illnesses

Merely being nervous about an exam or what you plan to do after college is not an anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorders must interfere with your ability to function. I am not convinced anxiety is more common today than in the past. It's always been around but people simply didn't get treatment back in the day. (They became alcoholics instead).
Google says 18% of adult Americans will suffer from an anxiety disorder every year. (GAD, Panic Disorder, PTSD, OCD, etc.)
Also from Google:
So people with untreated anxiety are needlessly using up medical resources. That's because anxiety is not just in your head, it can cause physical symptoms which eventually turn people into hypochondriacs. It can be frustrating for GP's or ER docs. Therefore, I would rather people just go get help than use up medical resources endlessly. Go get on an SSRI, do some breathing exercises and get back to life. Or if you want, smoke a joint.
And, no it's not a personality flaw. The chemicals in your brain become fricked up. Genes play a role as does childhood trauma and life circumstances. Life circumstances hit you and your genes determine how you react. This is why some combat vets get PTSD while other guys in the same unit do not.
Whatever the case, no one "chooses" to be anxious and people who've never had it simply don't get it. To them anxiety is no big deal, but that's only because they've never suffered from it.
For example, I've never had cancer. So what if I were to tell a 110 lbs. bald baw "Haha, bro, you're just weak getting cancer you loser." I would get punched in the face by him, everyone in his family and probably the doctor too. But it's OK to make fun of Brittney Spears for being hospitalized or call people who are struggling "nut jobs" and what not. It's fricked up.

Because parents coddle their kids and teach that it’s someone else’s job to solve their problems. Kids today are soft. Anytime something goes wrong, they freak out and cry to someone about it.

Calm down. We’re trying to have an actual discussion and exchange of thoughts and ideas. Either control your emotions or go find whatever IM thread is currently running.

Your problem is speaking facts.
Darth only wants to confirm what he thinks and that's that kids today are pussies and wouldn't last one day in his shoes fearing nuclear Armageddon.

You really don’t think some kids have test anxiety?
No, that's bullshite. Most people get anxious when taking a test, it's a natural reaction for anyone. Claiming that you need special treatment because you don't like taking tests is just an example of someone who can't handle any adversity. Study for the test and you'll be less anxious. Anxiety is a negative feeling, but that doesn't mean you should never, ever experience it.

So you resort to insults when all I’ve done is provide educated information to answer your question?
And I am going to reply to every post in this thread since you think you can boss me around
