You can skimp on some things. Tires isn’t one of them. And, when you look at the lifetime cost, there isn’t any benefit in buying cheap tires.

I have $800 worth of tires on my boat trailer.

With high quality tires, you generally get a lot of warning signs well before a blowout. Cheap ones, who knows? Maybe they last, maybe they kaboom for no apparent reason.

So lets assume this math holds true. How long are you keeping these cars? How many miles per year? If you have two sets of tires at 90k plus the 20-30k the OEM tires get you, are you really keeping these cars for 220k miles? That would be 15-20 years given the average car usage per year.And tire dry rot sets in around 6 years, so where does that put us?
Anyway, your car, your money, but I have had some pretty remarkable cars over the years and I think expensive tires are superfluous unless you are doing something really specialized like racing on a track, off-roading, extreme driving, etc... I don't buy no-name bargain tires, but middle of the road in terms of price and durability. I don't plan on tires lasting more than 30-40,000 miles as I tend to drive a bit fast and own heavier or more powerful cars, they idea of going 90k miles is a bit like saying "bigger is better", the margin of diminishing returns in the real world definitely sets in.

The math is completely against you. First, define "subpar". 30 years ago Firestone had some issues that almost sunk the company. Making "subpar" tires is not a recipe to stay in business for a mainstream tire company, they've learend this the hard way. Second, fatalities on the road come from three major sources: speeding, drinking, distracted driving. NTSB says tire-related crashed are under 1% of all crashes. You see about as many people dying from bee stings and wild animals as from tires.

But there is a significant difference between "skimp" and extravagance. I don't know why we are treating this as a binary issue. There are literally 18 different speed ratings for tires,and that's just one facet of how to rate tires. There are other categories like weather, application, brand name, quietness, tread life...
Just going out and buying the most expensive tires "because they're the best" despite the tires supposedly outlasting your ownership of said car (if they really last that long) is kind of silly.

I buy tires mainly based upon stopping power.
You hit someone in the rear and it’s gonna cost you vastly more than any tire savings.

An interesting take on things. If you ever watched "Le Mans" the race car movie that was the secret to Porsche winning. The Ferrari couldn't stop as well so they had to break earlier. I don't have a 911 but I've driven a handful and man can they stop fast.

Interesting fact, it turned out to the weight of the Ferrari 512 in 1971 (The year the movie takes place) that was the undoing of the braking system for them. They used the same Girling ventilated disc brakes as the Porsche, but the the weight of the Ferrari caused them to push past the thermal limits of the brakes meaning they had to be much more careful to not overheat them and that they couldn't drive as deep into the corners. Jacky Ickx had a catastrophic failure that caused his accident from overheating. Porsche had similar issues with managing heat, including cracking discs and having the drivers back way off to avoid failure, but overall managed it much better.
