44% of the population lives under the poverty line. They have that going for them

Court House has a lot of historical documents.

Also, amazing monkey grass that a lot of teenagers planted for community service.

Judge, did you graduate in 80 or 81? You might know my brother.

And I think I know who you are. Daddy a coach? Brother a writer? Other brother went to LSU then moved to DC for a while?

No. My dad was the ophthalmologist. That is a dead give away if you grew up in Opelousas.

I can think of exactly one family that fits.

Not me, but grew up in his neighborhood.

John Ed lives in Mandeville now. I don't know where Bobby is.

Wasn't Gina their sister? I think she is a Tuttle now and still practices in Opelousas.

Coach was an all star human being, just a quality man all the way around.

Never got to meet him, but went to school with his nephew and nieces. I've read a lot of his old SI stuff. It's pretty great, despite how melancholly it usually is. I specifically remember a story on Brandon Burlsworth from Arkansas.

Yeah, her kids are who I went to school with. Really nice person. She actually gave me copies of a bunch John Ed's published writings when I was in high school.

Judge, there was also a filthy rich Jewish family or two that owned (?) Haas Hirsch (spelling?).

What do you know about that?

Opelousas is a shithole, just like most of Louisiana. if it werent for my wife and I's parents, we would have moved away long ago. with a 2 year old daughter, it gets harder and harder to stomach the thought of raising a child around here.

The Davlins owned Standard Fittings.

Irwin died in a plane crash near Dallas, along with a local pilot named Steve Aerhart.

I flew with Steve from time to time. Irwin gave me a job. Good people both.

Steve had flown for the CIA in Vietnam. There absolutely WAS a Barry Seal/drug running connection to the Opelousas airport, but I have a hard time believing Steve (or Irwin) was wrapped up in it.

Ok, but what has all that to do with the lady judge?

This may explain some of your distaste. I don't know you, brah, but hard to see that moniker going with a man-of-the-people round about Opelousas.

No doubt. My parents still live there as well as one of my brothers. I only go back for holidays. My wife is from the Northeast and hates going to the Big O. She finds it depressing.
