I know a couple of kids in their mid to late twenties who are heavy equipment mechanics for a large sand mining outfit here that operates 24/7/365.

They're both knocking down over $150k+ a year working 16+ overtime hours a week. They get full benefits including company trucks and a matching retirement plan up to 10% of their contributions, which is outstanding. Platinum BCBS insurance. Federal holidays. Generous PTO days. Two beautiful families. Both are fellow Veterans.

They do 20+ hours of overtime when they feel like working weekends.

One works days and the other prefers nights.

They seem to be happy. Their wives and kids seem to be happy.

I know a guy that travels around the country buying and selling used catalytic converters. He makes 300k + a year. Dangerous job as he travels with a lot of cash which he keeps in a safe inside his truck. He has been robbed before.

16-20 hours of OT a week to make $150k does not scream "great job". Always being at work with no life sucks. Yeah, you can make great money, but you are only young once and you will never get that time back. The older you get the more you realize that time is just as important as money.

For this exercise let's discuss those careers where you get paid but can do it on 40 hours or less. Those are great jobs.

MIL's BF does hotshot work with his 3/4 ton moving different types of parts and equipment. Startup cost is expensive but you make the money back within a few months. If you're okay being on call often and driving all the time, it's easy work. Hazard pay last year for moving multiple generators from BR to NOLA before the hurricane came in last year was a big money maker. Lots of businesses his company is involved with purchase things that are generally needed yesterday, so they pay a premium to get them there quick.

I had a friend who used to do that out of CENLA back in the 90s. He did well until he discovered crack.
