Children are taught that they are wonderful and that no matter what thought pops into their head, everybody else must love them for it.
You lose, no biggie. Here is your trophy that is equivalent to the winner.
You are fat. No biggie. Everyone must love and praise you even if they don't like fat people.
You wiped a booger on Suzie's arm. Suzie only complained because she is a bitch.
There is no personal responsibility being taught. Children are taught that they should do whatever they feel like and that it is OK. Then the real world hits where you work hard and handle your business or be replaced.
Some kids adapt. Some don't. They have all been taught that everything is somebody else's fault. Those with a little crazy that have anger issues anyway feel that they are justifiably lighting up a school or theater.
The solution is easy. Make them work hard and take the blame when they are wrong. Educate them. Send them out into the world prepared to pay their dues and bills.

Too much idle time. Not enough work. Work is good for the mind. Would these kids be as likely to shoot up the school if they had to work every afternoon to pay for a car, gas, and spending money.
Work gives you a sense of purpose and accomplishment and gives your mind a break from self loathing and depression
I do agree with others that this is a relatively peaceful time in history. What is higher than normal is senseless violence, random killing, etc.

You are extremely naive if you think this is a "violent time" in world history.

Open prescription of anti-depressants can’t possibly be helping. Society is way over medicated these days.

He od'd but he and 2 significant others had a violent past. He did 120 days in saint gabriel with 2 years probation for his last. His first incident was dismissed for lack of proper evidence. And I do not know the story there. I do know that he also had several altercations in bars and other places and also with local sheriff in 2003. His parents were really never there for him. He worked offshore and had some tumultuous times with his baby's mother and another girlfriend. He is gone. Maybe it was for the best. He was badly hooked on Heroin and other Drugs that complimented it.

It does not matter. Columbine started it all as the internet was widely available in a very social media way. It does not matter that there was no brand name yet. The ingredients were there. I will always call this the starting point of where we are and where we are still.

Attention.
Since Columbine, the one common thing with every school shooter was the desire for notoriety.

Internet recognition is a powerful thing regardless of medium

Parental involvement or lack thereof?
A combination of these two. What these shooters are after is noteriety, and the press fricked up hardcore trying to understand the Columbine Shooters. The future shooters build shrines to the shooters of the past, and for ratings, they report the murderers names. They then seek to top their predecessors, and then it has just spiraled out of control.
Very few of them are politically motivated, and when they are it is instantly obvious.
And people have to remember that our parents had this with serial killers back in the day, and they managed to kill just as many people as these shooters do, and violent crime has largely gone down since the 80s. The serial killer is mostly a dead breed in this country at least, and the streets are safer now more than ever.

Lazy parenting, psychological disorders, desensitization to violence, and people thinking they are special and wanting fame/infamy.

It's a 24-hour news cycle as has been stated. If you look at crime statistics, violent crime has been steadily decreasing every year since the 80s or 90s.

The real problem is the mass casualty events which are certainly linked to media attention.

We were created to serve others, not only serve only ourself. If these kids are allowed to do what they want most of the time, then they are creating selfish habits. As these habits mature they will become selfish people. Some of them will have the potential to go off the deep end. Today we have more selfish people, so there are more opportunities for one of them to spiral out of control and lose their mind.
