what happens if you don't pay a lawyer?

I didn't receive a bill for the last 6 months, but now I got one. She was a lousy lawyer and I still owe her over a thousand bucks.
If I don't pay, will they write it off? I haven't used her since December and I won't again.

Tell the whole story so we can make a proper determination.

If you legit owe, then why are you not paying?

I guess it depends on what type of case it is.
If PI, they can put a lien on your settlement with the new attorney.

I'd imagine the reason that many people don't pursue legal action for theft of services is the legal fees... This bitch has the resources and it won't cost her any *real* money...
Prepare your anus.

I have a friend that's a lawyer and he has people that owe him. The other day a guy that owed him, called him to represent him, and he basically told him you gotta pay up first.
I don't know if they all operate that way, but it may not be that big of a deal.

I would say that out of all professions to try to stiff for services provided, a lawyer would probably not be the best to pull that shite on...

The wicked borrows but does not pay back, but the righteous is generous and gives. Psalms 37:21
You sound pretty wicked, bruh.

How was she lousy?
People here will talk trash about you not paying, but I wouldn't pay for services that I don't feel lived up to my expectations or didn't complete what I asked of them. If anything, I would try to settle it for a lower cost to be done with it.
However, if she held up her end of the agreement then you owe her in full.

Collection agency, nonstop phonecalls. Eventual judgement. Bench warrant.

You should have settled things 3-4 months ago - either by paying her or by getting her to agree to a reduced fee if you didn't think much of her level of service. What were you thinking, that she'd just conveniently forget?

Depends on how desperate she is for income but if she's serious you will owe the money.

Hire another to fend her off, you do remember this is what they do? A clerk will make your life Hell while she sips wine.

Not much. There is no bench warrant issued for a private debt.

Unless the lawyer is a complete a-hole, s/he won't pursue a civil action against you. It's usually not worth the potentially bad word of mouth from the disgruntled client. If you were talking 10 grand it'd be a different deal, but none of the lawyers I've worked with have ever pursued a debt under 1K for any reason.

Most times, especially with a solo or small firm, they'll just write it off if it's not a huge amount.

see if she will represent you in not paying her bill...
