My brother and I took a Civil War Battle field trip in 1995. He worked on the road so he knew all the back roads. This trip was all Waffle House and Mom and Pop motels. There was one place that I absolutely refused to stay. The bath tub had a ring that would probably have to be chiseled to be removed. I noticed that you could hear a lot of noise from the interstate and realized there was no transom above the door. We left to find a Holiday Inn. We did stay in some pretty cool places that were clean and kept that 50's look.

Interstates
Also, people simplified their taste and prefer to go to places to which they are familiar.

I have an affinity for the old highway 1950s motels.

Yeah, stayed at one in Napa. Total boner killer. I felt like I was trying to smash in my grandma's house, not to mention the walls were paper thin.

Time and money got them man. Also, many of hem were built along older routes. The interstate system gets built and there is a faster way to travel. Last, families used to leave home with a destination, clothes, and a map. You would stop when you were tired along the way

One of the memories I retained from when I was around 5 years old was a family trip to Houston back in the early ‘70s. Headed to Astroworld packed into a VW Beetle. Road atlases, stopping at the full service gas station to pick up local maps once you got to the area, etc. Good times.

We used to do this growing up in the 90s. I miss using the big atlas book

Sorry, man, but my corporate loyalty program got me a stay in the Capital Hilton in downtown BR, for the game against TAMU, for $101 a night. Everyone else was forking over big bucks to stay there.

I'll continue staying in the soulless corporate places, thank you very much.

Springdale, Moab, and a few others have a LOT of older, very well-preserved motels. Most of them get good ratings or at least average ratings on sites like Trip Advisor.

I have great memories of these style motels.

9 yr old me, my mom and 21 yr old brother drive to Watertown N.Y. in 1977 to see my grandparents who I'd never seen before. In a Chevy nova hatchback with a map and travelers checks.

Stayed at mom and pops from BR to N.Y. and all the way back. Master Inn in Virgina was one of my favorites along with the cardinal motel on the blue ridge parkway. Remember a great log cabin type place in the Pocono mountains.

Just a different world then but I loved it, glad I grew up when I did
