Alabama House Repeals Last Financial Lifeline for BSC

Are there any BSC alumni here? What exactly was the cause that killed an entire university?

I’ve known several BSC grads over the years, they were sharp and came from affluent families. I get the feeling this is a vendetta from the minority members of the Alabama legislature against an affluent school.

Any Alabama citizens care to provide more context?

It’s surrounded by some of the highest crime ghetto in Birmingham. Anyone who would consider Bham Southern has a better option about 15 minutes away on I-65 called Samford University.

Yep. Limited market for small expensive liberal arts colleges in Birmingham and Samford won.

I suspect Millsaps will die soon for same reason. Belhaven doing fine.

Economics, bad management, changing tastes
1.) It's severely overpriced for the education you're getting.
2.) Most of Alabama's elite are going to Bama or Auburn anyway.
3.) Birmingham is a declining city

If they couldn't survive without subsidies, they probably shouldn't operate. Just my two cents.

That would explain why Rep. Juandalynn Givan (D-Birmingham) proposed taking over the campus and turning it into housing and community centers.

It’s a beautiful campus, that seems a waste.

While their alumni might have been from well to do families, once they graduated, they never made enough money to donate back to BSC.

wasn't it at one time affiliated with the Methodist church? seems like the PKs all went there back in the 70's and 80's. Much like Samford and the Baptists

the only person I know that attended, went on and got a law degree.

Samford isn’t a liberal arts college. But fundamentally, BSC wasn’t able to attract enough students to be viable. The neighborhood thing was a headwind for them but really wasn’t that bad. For any institution to survive it has to be providing something of value that people are willing to pay for. BSC failed to do that.

Will be one of many liberal arts colleges that go under.

Why pay hundreds of thousand of dollars to get what is instantly available for free in the palm of you hand?

Back in the 2000s to mid 2010s they had a string of bad leadership that invested money on horrible things. They built a big park in the middle of campus with a big man made lake. They built a lot of semi "luxury" dorms. They started a football program and built an on campus stadium. They thought it would increase enrollment buy enrollment actually went down. Combine that with no "whale" donors who could write a single check to fix their problems and this is what happens.

Morris Bart may have been a Tennessee graduate.

I was picking up a part at an Auto Parts store and the guy behind the counter saw my Louisiana Drivers License. He volunteered "My uncle's a lawyer down there." I saw his lsst name was Bart. I muzzled myself and just said, "I think I've seen some of his ads on TV".

Money mismanagement

No real marketing that I saw local to compete with Samford or UAB.

Surrounding neighborhood is beyond saving...which I think those in an official position are afraid to say this, but Birmingham is a failing city.
