Agreed but in my case pretty much all business acceptable versions of my name are taken

Buy your own domain and get Google Apps for Business to host it for $50/year.
You get the solid Google back end functionality and you look professional at the same time when you're looking for a job.
John@johndoe.com looks way better than hoglover69@yahoo.com

I work in eCommerce, so we often have people who call in because they can't figure out the internet. It's fun to associate who you talk to with their email address. It seems like all the olds have AOL, hotmail, or sbcglobal accounts. The younger generation, who we never talk to on the phone, uses yahoo or gmail.

I'm still pissed that my sooper kewl loandude@beer.com account was shut down. I really thought that would be my lifer email address. I still use my Hotmail, but really only for online purchases. Do people actually email these days?

Nothing but lies.
Unless it said something nice. Then you can believe it.

I look down on anyone who doesn't use their own domain.

When someone uses a gmail account I assume they steal wifi, have no stability in life, jump on the latest trend (likely own an iphone), and are generally shifty (probably a millennial that doesn't have the credit to get a real domain)
That said, other than applying for a job the usefulness of emails is highly limited.

Or do the same thing with the free version. That $50 is per user so it would get expensive quick if you add friends or family accounts to your domain.
We use the free version for our office and it works fine. Only issue is having to go around and purchase more storage individually on each account.

Believe it or not my HOA until this past summer had a compuserve account. With the numbers as the username, like 12345@computerserve.com. Yes, the HOA board was a bunch of bluehairs who probably didn't know how to use it anyway.
First thing our new board did was get a domain and hosted email.

Is there a more trivial complaint about a neighborhood than the domain of the HOA email account.
It does sound like something a HOA nazi would concern themselves with

I still have the same yahoo address I started with many moons ago
I see no reason to change it, so I'm not
The thought of having to change my email address is more painful than changing banks
