I was at a pool yesterday enjoying the holiday and a few 20-somethings nearby loudly kept using the word adulting in the context of, "I don't want to adult tomorrow." I figure it means going to work, but do you think they are talking more about not wanting the maturity and/or responsibilities of being an adult? If so why not just say, "I don't want to go to work tomorrow."?

Side note: I'm a 20-something as well, but has no clue why using that adjective can be used as a verb now.

I am, but I wasn't sure the word was a pop culture reference that may have flown over my head or if someone could shine a better light on the word.

ELI5 version:

When you do shite that you really don't want to, but do out of responsibility. Going to work, cleaning your house, doing laundry, mowing the yard, etc.

what do you think might be different about today than yesterday?

Perhaps they have to get up early (they didn't yesterday), go to work today (they didn't yesterday) and can't drink beer all day at a pool (like they did yesterday). Ya know, things typically expected of adults.

It's not real friggin hard to figure out.

Working a full time job, being responsible, in a long term rationship, and forgoing short term pleasures and leisure activities in favor of working in order to build a better future for yourself and your family.

It sucks. Alot.

What I'm doing today - working my arse off all day in a job I need to support my family, going to a house that's too small, not spending money on things I want, and then going home to do house hold chores and bullshite. Tomorrow I have to wake up and do it all over again. And again again for year and years. It won't even seem worth it until I'm around 40. But by then I'll have a shite load of money saved up towards retirement and I can take my foot off the gas a little and enjoy the hell out of life.

What I'd rather do - get loaded with my buddies and play guitar. I'd rather say frick tomorrow, I'll figure that out tomorrow. Today I'm just gonna relax, enjoy life, and have a good time.

For me adulting means getting out of my PJ's and going to work.
Day off me likes sitting in pj's on the couch, eating cereal, watching Netflix, playing video games, etc. You know - the fun stuff. Work is dumb.
