re: What does the OT think of Atlanta?

Back when we had houses in NOLA and had bought our farm in east Tennessee, we decided to go to Atlanta for a weekend. (This was over 25 years ago.)
We had reservations and a couple of maps. We pulled into downtown, saw some demonstration, saw kids out of school (not a weekend day), and decided, "You know, we can get the same views in NOLA", so we cancelled resrvatgions and went somewhere in South Carolina in stead.

Would avoid Atlanta if I could. Like I said about Houston. If you have an opportunity to grow your career then sure go for it but if all things are equal why would anyone just voluntarily move to Atlanta?
I basically did. There's no professional middle class in New Orleans. Didn't really have any friends there.

quote:Indeed. Only time we're on the interstate are short hops on 285 or heading to the airport. We're only ~10-15mins from Perimeter which is pretty darn good. Thanks for the tip about restaurants on Howell Mill, btw. We'll have to check those out.
There are multiple ways to get around the city and never have to get on the interstate.... Need to go to Perimeter?

We just assumed Buckhead would be "it". Went through several lovely places there. But traffic in the surrounds was just too heavy to pull the trigger, and there does seem to be a higher crime issue now than in the past. So we took a look up here and voila. Didn't fully appreciate how accessible everything was until after the fact.
We lived in two separate nice, established Buckhead neighborhoods and would have been ok with young kids in either. But even as security minded as I was, I didn't realize how a couple of miles would feel like 100.
Honestly, it might be more convenient now - we get practically no commercial traffic but we're closer to major arteries than we'd be if we buried ourself into a Buckhead neighborhood to get the same separation.

We went to Buckhead after the semifinal and I was pretty disappointed by it. Very trashy. We probably just went to the wrong places though
I assume you went out in the East Andrews bar district (5 Paces, 30, Lost Dog, Iberian Pig, etc...)
That area used to be prime 8-10 years ago. It's gone to complete shite. Full of underage kids too.

FWIW I'm from here and Howell Mill makes me want to gouge my eyes out

Restaurants down there are closing left and right because of the skyrocketing price of rent.
The quality of roads in West Midtown make New Orleans look like a velvet magic carpet.

I'll gladly sing its praises for the quality of stuff down there (it's a cool area). I lived nearby as it hit its stride and even with the kids we're still down there a couple times a month on average.
But it's also miserable to move around in and it's still got a lot of sketch parts.

Howell's is ok though but getting there sucks.

There is a ton of good stuff down there. We used to go to Howells a ton, but it's pretty identical to Hearth and Camps so between the three I'm sick of it.

Ate at the Varsity also while downtown.
It was actually open? I think its only open about 3 hours a week and you have to guess which 3....I don't know how they stay in business.

A lot of the restaurants are closing. Some are blaming parking.

Downtown will be good in a few years. CIM Development out of LA is making progress on Centenniel Yards. It is going to fill in the entire undeveloped area between State Farm Arena and Mercedes-Benz/ Centenniel Park. The area that has been labeled “The Gulch” for a long time. Just acres and acres of property that is at original 1800s street level. Some seedy parking lots for events at the arena and stadiums is all it’s been used for for decades. CIM has already completed a couple of 20+ story buildings right in front of Mercedes. One a hotel and the other apartments. Phase II is underway now and targeted to be ready by the World Cup next summer. It will have a Cosym, a 6,000 seat concert arena, and a 5 story hotel , restaurants and shops, sitting on a podium. After that, there are 15-20 more buildings on the master plan that will completely transform the DT district. It will be much like the Battery up at Truist Park but much larger when done
Apparently there is a developer quietly buying everything West of Vine City Marta Station between MLK and Joseph Boone Blvd and Joseph Lowery Blvd. Do not know if this is true or not but there is a lot of talk about it in Atlanta.

There is parking at West Side and a garage at Putt Shack. There is also parking where Iberian Pig and Yeah Burger used to be. It's almost better to go down Atlanta road and loop back and come up Howell Mill from the south.
The area by Anthropologie and Cooks and Soldier is not great for cars.

I flew out of ATL this morning and it was very pleasant. Didnt have to remove laptops. My kid didnt have to take off his shoes. They waved us around the body scanner. I havent flown since covid when my job went remote, so i dont know if thats a recent change?

We lived by Emory (less than half a mile from the law school) for 20 years and made Atlanta live much smaller than it is.
Worked from home all but a total five years of it.
I could run a marathon distance from my front door with 90% trails/paths.
Had an acre of wooded land on a pretty creek.
Walk to Emory Village (lame but was fun back in the day), downtown Decatur, even ran home from VaHi a lot of nights win driving was ill-advised even on the “anti-DUI” neighborhood routes.
Easy access to the east-west MARTA line for airport (have to change trains in ghetto assed Five Points, not to be confused though often confused with Little Five Points, which is also ghetto but with good music).
As-noted, if you avoid the worst of traffic (GL) easy drive to both the Gulf and cool Atlantic beaches. And real mountains (by southern Appalachian standards) are under a couple hours.
I lasted 20 years (had a place in Montana for 15 of it, and family/friends in other cool places to escape to), when I had planned to stay one year.
All that said I don’t miss it. It was a lot of fun in my late-20s through 30s though. Gen-X crowd all knew each other in VaHi.

quote:We were looking at a place near Piedmont. Nice home. Beautiful street. Seller's realtor took us around, pointing out insane security features d/t the previous owner's celeb status. Concluded by saying, even with the pick up in crime, this place would be safe. It wasn't quite the sales pitch she thought it was.
