What does music say about a culture?

I think about the song Big Rock Candy Mountain, and what it reveals between the lines about the time and place it was written.

The Depression, the Dust Bowl, Forclosures, hoboes and handouts…
So this thread was supposed to be this philosophical discussion about music as a reflection of culture across history but then I got distracted and wrote this dumb parody about our culture to the tune of

To the tune of “Big Rock Candy Mountain.
Big Woke Karen Shoutin’

One evening as the sun went down,
And the Soccer Moms were blogging,
Down the sidewalk came a Karen,
In her Yoga pants while Jogging,

She wore 2 masks with strugglin’ breaths,
saw workin baws not wearin,
Some worthless cloth, so she went off,
That Big Woke Shoutin’ Karen,

That Big Woke Karen Shoutin’
Said she’d call the police,
She tweets “All Cops Are Bastards”
But needs them for hurt fee fees

And she wants papers presented,
For proof of a vaccine,
And demands that you,
Act like she wants to,

Just a hypocrite,
So who gives a shite,
About Big Woke Karen Shoutin’

Then the Big Woke Karen Shoutin’
Pulls out her new smartphone,
And starts to stream, on the WiFi beams,
Mega corporations own,

Her Prius sticker’s “COEXIST”,
But she can’t tolerate,
Any other views,
And she tries to use,

Cancel Culture,
To harm and abuse,
That Big Woke Karen Shoutin’

That Big Woke Karen Shoutin’
She slurps up CNN,
Then without any questions,
Clucks it out like a hen,

She can’t abide folks asking,
When the facts just don’t add up,
If you don’t obey,
What the pundits say,
You’re a sexist, racist,
KKK,
To the Big Woke Karen Shoutin’

But the Big Woke Karen Shoutin’
Says “Not In My Backyard”,
But then she wants more policies,
That make other’s lives hard,

There seems to be no limit,
To her inane demands,
It’s rules for thee,
But not for me,
Just absolute,
hypocrisy,
For the Big Woke Karen Shoutin’

And I for one, Have Had enough,
Of the Big Woke Karen Shoutin’

Yeah, I know, TL;DR.

Anyway, any other good examples of how history of a culture can be viewed through its music?

I want to make you feel good about your work here, I just can’t think of anything nice to say about it.

Keep doing you, bro!

I’m tired and didn’t even realize I was reading something from fr33... I like all of your stuff better than this piece. There. That’s my compliment. You’re usually much more appreciated by me.

Pretty much any protest song from the 60s. Dylan had two of the best. Most would point to "The Times they are Changing" is the best he wrote during that time, but "Masters of War" and "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" are better.

I actually have a big spot in my heart for quality protest songs that aren’t as in your face about it.

Instead of telling you how to think they tell a story,
Like And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda
Or
Run through the jungle

You got me a while back with "Waltzing Matilda". You're not doing it again tonight. Great song with some great renditions out there, but man....it is rough.

It’s a rather famous American folk song from the depression that got a lot of play because of the seemingly silly lyrics. And it is, on the surface. But peel back an onion layer and it’s biting satire. There was a final verse that wasn’t released in the studio cut but lived on around the campfire.

Here it is

“The punk rolled up his big blue eyes and said to the jocker, “Sandy,
I’ve hiked and hiked and wandered too, But I ain’t seen any candy.
I’ve hiked and hiked till my feet are sore,
I’ll be God damned if I hike any more,
To be buggered sore like a hobo’s whore
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains.”

I don’t know if this is exactly what you’re looking for, but a lot of the good music from the late 60’s and early 70’s reflected the anti-war and hippie culture of the time. That was also the time the “folk” style had a comeback...there was a good mix of rock and roll and folk styles at that time.

I heard Big Rock Candy Mountain for the first time watching “O Brother Where Art Thou?” I love that movie, mainly for the soundtrack.

Angela is no Karen, that's for sure.

Although she does have a stick up her arse quite often.
