Continuation of the suburbs thread a few days ago.

For those who still live in Louisiana, and you do have the option of leaving your family, what keeps you? What's the perspective? Is it the low cost of living, or just an ability to look at life and be content with the lot in life you've been given?

Same question for those who have left. Why? If there is family back home, what pulled you away? Job, curiosity?

This isn't a shite on Louisiana thread. I'm trying to get perspective on why people do what they do when it comes to where they settle down. Everyone has their reasons.

Family, friends, running into people I grew up/went to high school with, the interconnectivity of acquaintances. Plus, the general culture of always finding a way to have a good time

I definitely recognize the shitty aspects but I’ve been to other places and while nice, they just seem bland

The family and friends are definitely a positive, but the running into acquaintances bit is the complete opposite for me.

I don't want to see anyone from high school that isn't still a close friend. I know some other people that feel the same as I do, and then I know people that feel the opposite.

Sounds like you're home.

People leave their families to improve their economic conditions or quality of life. End of story.

I moved to Dallas for 3 years. Didn’t like it from day one but the money was good so I stuck it out. I moved back to Louisiana about 6 years ago and have no regrets. I was able to spend time with my grandparents in their final years. And I generally just like being back home. I look forward to raising my kids the way I was raised.

Sometimes I wonder if I had moved somewhere other than Dallas would I have stayed.

Yeah, I agree in the most simple terms. You either value your family to the point that you can't imagine leaving them or you realize that, while the grass isn't necessarily greener elsewhere, it is different enough to justify leaving roots. And maybe the first place has Bermuda grass and you find out you're allergic.

Poor analogies aside, at what point do you know that you're strong enough to take advantage of the culture while not getting stuck in the same rut? If you leave Louisiana and become a better person for it, is there ever a time to return?

Realizing that with intelligence, hard work, and knowing how to do certain things, I can come to dominate these yokels here in Louisiana.

Also the food.

Food is one of many reasons I left. I had no self-control. And I didn't realize it, but everyone around me was also obese.

I would have left 2 years during Covid if my wife's family wasn't such a big part of our lives. While I know I'd miss the food, the people, and the fishing, it really is greener in other states. Our government is horrendous and our taxes are outrageous for what public services we do have.

Family and my career tethers me to South Louisiana. I could technically do what I do anywhere but a specific industry allows me to make more money here than anywhere else.

We live in LA because my wife and I have great jobs that would be difficult to replicate elsewhere.

We live in Mandeville specifically because of family, school, neighborhood.

If we could find our same jobs somewhere else we'd probably move in a heartbeat.

I was born and raised in LA and then left in 1995. I left because job market for my field was really poor in LA then (and is still now). I miss family and the food. I go periodically to visit family. Do I miss living there? No, except for being near family and the good food.

I clearly remember Gov. Edwin Edwards and how he ran things. I remember the gubernatorial runoff of Edwin Edwards and David Duke. I remember Edwards saying something like "The only way I can lose is if I get caught in bed with a dead girl or a live boy". So many Louisiana residents thought that Edwards was funny. Who's laughing now? Louisiana had so much potential in the early 1970s. So much of it was wasted with corruption.

There are also way too many dumbasses in Louisiana who are proud to be dumbasses. Who wants to live anywhere near that?

For those in LA, are the unique cultural aspects diminished any from prior decades?

As in, is it less consuming as a way of life, making it any easier to leave? It certainly seems that way everywhere else, IMO.

I didn’t hate DFW at all, but I knew I wasn’t going to spend my life there after a couple months
