Well they were not reading as much. They were not driving cars or operating heavy machinery or surfing the web. As long as you could see well enough to not bump into things and recognize food and water you were probably okay.

I'm -5.5, which essentially means that I can't see anything in focus until it is about a foot away from my face

But, I still have my hair.

Oddly enough, in 2017 it's worse to lose your hair young than it is to lose your vision.

That is just for Presbyopia, requiring reading glasses in what is now middle age. The other common conditions requiring corrective lenses start at birth, and have fully developed by the time a person is around 18 years old.
