The bigger mystery is where is Bobbie Gentry?

Should have got vaxxed. Papa talked shite about Billy Joe, but he wasn't so damn smart himself.

Goddamn. Yall are some dark motherfrickers. How about this instead?

They were young and in love but can't be together because her father would never approve. He needs to get the frick out of Choctaw Ridge but his clan don't allow family to leave their people and go to the City. It's all he has ever dreamed of. So they decide to take their suicides and run away together. The Preacher sees them and the girl knows he will tell the father and the father will hunt them down. So she sacrifices herself, sends him to the city and she returns to her mundane life on the farm. But dreams of life in the city with him every night.

Meanwhile... he makes it to the City. Becomes famous as an underground bare knuckle prize fighter because he has no other skills. Drinks and whores his way through the city before becoming addicted to heroin and dies in an alley late one evening.

Had to go dark at the end.

I actually watched the shitty move from the 70’s with Robbie Benson. I don’t remember much about it other than they were throwing a doll off the bridge.

Gentry was a great storyteller, and I believe she was implying that it was a baby.

Btw, she was married to Jim Stafford for a couple of years, during the period when he had a variety show. Did you know he introduced the world to Captain and Tennille?

You know in the movie Billy Joe jumped off the bridge cuz he was gay. And the point of the song was to show how ambivalent the parents were toward the kids death. That is, "He killed himself. Oh well, please pass the jelly".

I’ll be honest, aborted fetus never crossed my mind. Nobody disposed of an aborted fetus by throwing it off a bridge.

I always assumed it was a ring or other token of affection. The female narrator rejected Billy Joe for some reason, and Billy killed himself. She felt responsible, had said some mean things, and now she feels guilty. Doesn’t want to talk about it. Maybe they had had sex, etc. And now she lives with the guilt.

I think you’re right. “Pass the biscuits” is a pretty obvious clue

Billie Joe wasn't bona fide. Wasn't a suitor.
