I just asked my parents (both teens in the 60s) what they thought the couple threw over the bridge.

Mom: "A baby."

Dad: "A baby."

Bet she is really enjoying the continued royalties from Fancy after Reba covered it.

She was actually one of the original co-owners of the Phoenix Suns when they were an expansion team. She invested the money she made from Ode to Billie Joe into that venture.

I always assumed it was a ring or other token of affection. The female narrator rejected Billy Joe for some reason, and Billy killed himself.
That actually does make more sense. Why would they throw an aborted fetus off of a bridge? They could have just buried it.

Secret abortions are a trope of Southern Gothic fiction.

Edit: Sling Blade comes to mind, but that was a burial. But still, you talk about two young lovers disposing of something secret and people’s minds will automatically go to an abortion.

That's not an answer. The baby would be far more likely to be found in the river than buried deep in the woods somewhere.

There wouldn't be a song about it though. Bridges have been mystical places going back to the ancient Celts, and country music is rooted in Celtic music .
