Also, you're not paying taxes on earned income up to a certain threshold if you remain outside of the US for a certain period of consecutive time.
To get the tax break you either have to provide "bona fide" residence data to the IRS that you live in another country or during a 365 day period (can start at any time) you cannot be in the US for more than 35 days. The tax break is no taxes on the first $108,000.00 (I think it moves up to this figure for 2017) of income you earn. Anything you make over the $108,000.00 is taxed at the same level your entire salary would have been taxed at.
There a form (IRS 673 or 653) you can fill out and your US based company will take no taxes out of your check. What I do, however, is have the company take taxes out at S-0 rate. Then come tax time I file Married and joint with my wife and claim our 2 kids. My usual tax refund is between 30-60 thousand dollars each year.

St. Lucia is one of the easiest citizenships to get. Buy some property, apply, grease enough palms, then wait. Buying property is supposedly pretty sketchy though.

Dude, don't give up your U.S. citizenship. Make sure you chose a country where you can hold duel citizenship. You never know if and when you may want to come back. I thought I wouldn't come back but I did.
Mind if I ask about some of the specifics of what happened?

I think Brazil'so passport is the most widely accepted globally. At least, that has been my experience. They are relaxing their citizenship laws as well to attract more outsiders so you may consider that.

Are you technically allowed to have dual citizenship as a US citizen? I thought you have to renounce all other citizenships or something of that nature.
I thought about becoming a dual citizen of the U.K. But it seemed like there was some language that made it possible for your US citizenship to be revoked.

Lulz at it being "Passaporto" in Italiano.
The actual Italian words are like a parody of how you would goof on Italian.

As I've mentioned before in previous posts, my wife is from Australia. We married young at 19. I had the opportunity to live in Australia so I took it. I didn't know what the future held. I was very happy there. I liked my job; I liked the small town I lived in; I started my family there. As far as I was concerned I was set. The only downside was the high cost of living which put the dream of owning a home out of reach for us. Then my grandparents passed away back here and left me the house and family homestead so after some time thinking about it we decided there was more opportunity for us back in the states.

Plus, renouncing your citizenship for something like taxes, which are going to receive a dramatic overhaul in the next 6 months, makes it even more short sighted.

I hear Malta allows you to gain citizenship buy investing your money in the country

Why not sell the home in the States & put the money towards home in Australia if you were happy there?
Heir property & you aren't the sole beneficiary?
Just interested in this subject since I've considered retiring abroad.
I like hearing any pros / cons.

Interesting. Great grandparents were first generation Italian immigrants. I wonder if using this for dual citizenship is plausible?

I know since 2010 the number of Americans giving up their citizenship has been growing each year.

I've read the same thing.
Not a major number renouncing American citizenship overall ,but percentage wise it has been growing due to tax purposes.
