700hrs of OT? You don’t need to find a new job, you need to bump those numbers up and get into the 250k a year range, 700hrs of OT is a rookie number. If you don’t want out, while nearly impossible at my refinery, maint is a 4-10 job (outside of odd shift), Analayzer group (those fellas make their own hours but it’s a dead end job) and I&E (piss on running tuning all day) is laid back with upward movement. We’ve had several guys go to contractors like CatSpec, USA Debusk and PCI but they always come slinking back. Working on the road isn’t for everyone….. ssoooo get that OT up and retire at 55.

That sounds brutal.

I mean, I work 4 10's, so 1 Turnaround and a decent amount of Fridays a year and I'm there. But my point was $150k isn't some crazy number for Maintenance w/ very little OT.

Operations is similar like you said, I work 3 on and 3 off shift work and I like to get 3 days of overtime a month just for “extracurriculars”. My base salary is around $130k with my bonus so it’s fairly easy to hit the upper $100k range. I’m sure that varies by plant. 3 days extra a month is 430 hours of overtime.

First piece of advice: if you don't want to come across as a dullard stop using this phrase so much.

Since there’s so few plumbers, it’s not uncommon for plumbers to charge over $500 an hour for a service.

It is far less uncommon for people on tOT to just make shite up.

That post sounded like a poorly thought out El Gaucho special.

I’ve worked in plants for 26 years in both maintenance and operations and 200k is a little bit of an exaggeration on 700 hours ot. Somebody is feeding you a line.

And yall need to find a new plumber.

On the flipside, how would one get into working in a plant? Currently working upstream and ready to somewhat change up my career path

I was going to mention instrumentation or corrosion tech. Those skills are always in high demand but they are not making 150K.

You could get close to 150 as an instrumentation tech with more modest amounts of OT (50 hr weeks)

Go to trade school for plumbing or electrician. Get your apprenticeship, work for somebody else for a few years, and then start your own business and the sky’s the limit.

$50 an hour, built in overtime, bonus and 700 hours of overtime you’re very close to $200k.

What do operators do? Is this something that’s going to get wrecked by automation and AI one day?
