NDE is interesting. Phased array UT, acoustic emissions, time of flight diffraction…go from shift to turn arounds.

Get some project management certs and see if that gets you on the project team at the plant. Field knowledge is better than the experience your typical project manager has

Go into HES baw. You operators know the plant and operational practices the best.

there aren’t many jobs that pay that much money where you can sit around all day watching netflix and go out and turn a valve every now and then.

I was going to mention instrumentation or corrosion tech. Those skills are always in high demand but they are not making 150K.

Of course they do. I work Maintenance at a major refinery and OPs and Maintenance all make virtually the same, around $200k w/ 700ish hrs of OT a year.

150k? Dang, where you at? Do a lot of overtime? Top multi craft millwright pay at our mill is about 90k not including any overtime.

If you have personal skills, switch to the sales side for products into plants. Your experience will be a nice asset, but you have to have the people skills for that

Fireman. Starting out in the $60k range nowadays in bigger, metro markets. 24 on 48 off. Although some departments have migrated to 48-48. Plus all the fringes. It ain’t a bad gig.

Easily make 550k a year.

I genuinely cannot tell if PA's schtick of giving 1998 era advice is a ruse or genuine

There’s jobs out there. My brother is a career plant worker. Works probably 60+ hours a week for 125k. He still doesn’t believe me that I made 95k working M-F less than 40 hours a week

I retired from a local plant about 3 years ago. Switched to industrial sales to have something to do(they pay for my insurance and I have a company truck). I make about the same as before, give or take, and I am much happier not dealing with all of the bs that goes along with plant life.

not bad advice

but only manager level and above are making that salary in HSE

he may have to take a step down for a few years

also he will have to get used to everyone hating him

So? Plumbers and electricians still make pretty good money if they’re unionized.

Get into some sort of related technical compliance, training, inspector, or safety role. At least it’d get you off shift and into a gravy train office gig. You will have to do something tho. Contrary to what most operators think, people on ‘days’ do have to work.

It’s going to be tough completely switching industries without having to take a step (both in level and pay) back since you’d be pretty green.

I also heard roofers make $350,000/year
