The problem isn’t the Altima per se. The problem is Nissan approving anyone with a pulse for financing.
Attempting to keep up with payments, those financially strapped folks can't afford basic maintenance on their vehicles; therefore, giving the Nissan Altima an unfair bad name.

My first car out of college was a 05 Altima. I drove it for 10 years. I don’t care what anyone says I had zero issues with that car

Kia or Accord. At least, from what I’ve seen. Charger if they have money.

Brand new Kia forte is like 19k. Ballin on a budget

Nah. Hyundai Sonata or Elantra is quickly becoming the new Altima, especially around Atlanta.
Bingo. Been seeing more and more of these with that segment of the population.

Why would Nissan end one of their biggest sellers? I still don’t get the strategy behind that move.

Honda accord or Toyota Camry
Would never be either one of those.
Altimas are the choice because of CVT transmission problems makes them cheap on resale.
So whatever fits that bill will be the choice going forward.

Hyundai Elantra
Which is a damn shame because it’s a solid car.

I think Tesla will make it… Musk is no business dummy
When Tesla rolls out a sub 25k car with no tax incentives, they will continue to be a niche carmaker.
Tesla may even embrace a new hybrid car that uses a ICE engine to keep the car powered when the battery dies.

I drove a rental Altima for about a month when my truck was in the shop. I really enjoyed it. Had adaptive cruise control and got 30+ mpg driving back and forth down i55.

2) why did they get to be so bad quality wise. Weren’t the workhorses in the 90s? Was it all about the transmission?

Which manufacturer will finance anyone with a pulse?

why did altimas become known as cars trashed by poor people. Weren’t they like a working class or middle class persons car in the 90s?
So many were made and purchased by fleet as rentals, that they flooded the resale market. So every Drive Time/JD Byrider/Buy here Pay Here lot could get them at auction for cheap. Then the kinda demographic who will finance at 23% pick them up, struggle to maintain them, and they begin to fall apart.

Kia's and Hyundais have already been promoted to the hierarchy of trashiness.

But why?
The Versa is a good car.

Honda Accord is definitely turning into that.
Nissan should have turned the Altima into an actual sports sedan or a hybrid type of Prius competitor. Killing it and using production capacity for EVs that simply aren't selling is a mistake. At least Avis and Hertz was buying the Altima.
