What part of Baton Rouge are you trying to get to? Where are you taking the wife for bday or anniversary dinners? Most if not all of those places are on the south side of town. Zachary schools are rated high because the blacks there score basic. It's that simple. Look at the ACT scores relaeased today. The east bank of Ascension parish has the best schools in the state. That's a fact.

The highest score I see in Ascension is Dutchtown at 22.4.

C.E. Byrd (Caddo) is 22.4
Caddo Magnet (Caddo) is 26.3
Baton Rouge Magnet (EBR) is 25.6
Haynes (Jefferson) is 29.9
Pat Taylor (Jefferson) is 29.2
Thomas Jefferson (Jefferson) is 26.7
Lafayette (Lafayette) is 22.5
Early College Academy (Lafayette) is 24.1
Ben Franklin (Orleans) is 28.8
Lusher (Orleans) is 26.9
Mandeville (St. Tammany) is 23.8
Northshore (St. Tammany) is 22.5
Fountainebleau (St. Tammany) is 23.1
Lakeshore (St. Tammany) is 22.6
Anacoco (Vernon) is 23.2
LA Math and Science (BESE) is 29.5
NOCCA (BESE) is 22.8
LSU Lab (Univ Lab) is 26.4
Avoyelles (Charter) is 23.4

By my count that puts Ascension's best score as squeezing into the Top 20 by tie at #19.

By Parish: Ascension's best is beat by 2 in Caddo, 3 in Jefferson, 2 in Lafayette, 2 in Orleans, 4 in St. Tammany, 1 in Vernon, and 4 others that aren't technically parish run.

It's pretty sad when your 2 best restaurants are Sammy's and Walkons.

These are not the best restaurants in town.

What am I missing? Care to name what's better? Francois sure doesn't count. He has a few decent items on the menu but he loses his mind if you ask for special requests and is overall just difficult. I have walked in the place on a Saturday night around 7:00pm sat right down and he had the waitress tell us it would take at least 90 minutes to get our food because he needed a break.

Cafe Phoenicia is OK. Really liked it when I first found it but Ive found bugs in my food more than once.

Martha's is pretty decent but nothing special.

Cajun Catch is a nice lunch spot, but it's not exactly some place to take a date.

Zachary doesn't even have a decent Mexican restaurant. Cabo has good margaritas but the food is bad. El Agave has good food but the margaritas are bad.

Zachary is awesome for what it is. Unfortunately some posters in this thread are a little miffed that Ruth's hasn't opened a location on 64.

Golf options from here are pretty good too.

If your school's average ACT score is <17 your school should be shut down

I said I like Zachary. The biggest downside is the choices to go out to eat. You can go down the road to St Francisville and across the river to New Roads and have better options for dinner. Or you can go the other direction to Central which has much better options than Zachary also.

And yes. Nice golf options.

although i dont live there I live around 15-20mins north. It is a good stop gap from having to go to BR. Has just about everything I need.

Yes, the restaurant scene is obviously not as robust as BR but it's good enough. Only thing it doesnt have is a movie theater.

Lived there since 2003. I work on Corporate Blvd. It takes me 30 minutes to get to my office. I have kids in the schools while it's better than EBR we will probably move the younger kids to private school once they get to high school age. One issue I have is that the city council keeps approving track building subs developed by DR Horton and DSLD.
The Wal Mart is a shite hole and we do most of our shopping at Rouses. There are a few decent restaurants Cafe Phonica, Marthas Bistro, Asian Pearl, and Walk Ons. Bistro Byronz is putting in a restaurant at Americana. New Roads witht he Bridge is only 15-20 minutes away.
The commute to BR is the best of the burbs.

The town is named after the Zachary Family who originally owned the land where Zachary is located.
