I'd like a dog, I just can't justify getting one living in a small, downtown apartment.

It doesn't seem fair to the dog.

HA. yes.
people are always surprised when they find out i have one. i think they might be the easiest breed i've ever trained. i really never needed to train her. i kind of just point and say a command - even if it's a new one... and she knows what i'm telling her to do. for example, i never taught her "heel" but... she sure as shite gets on my left ankle when i give the command.

i remember reading that they require a lot of attention. not sure if that's true across the board- but i know when mine wants it, she makes sure everyone around her knows she's there and requires the pets and scratches.

sounds like a cop out. an apartment is better than a cage at the shelter or chained up or euthanized. find time to walk the dog and exercise it. the size of their dwelling doesn't matter, houses vs. apts (in my personal opinion), as long as they're getting exercised and socialized.

Moonshine is some type of shepherd.

About 3 times a day usually around the same times everyday, he is very vocal about needing some attention.

Once he gets his attention, he is chill as he can be the rest of the time.

Australian Shepherds are super smart and super athletic. Very high strung, so not for everybody, but a ton of fun to train, etc.

A Great Dane is going to calm down at about 6 months as opposed to 2 years and require way less exercise. The lab will be much smarter and probably more obedient. I’ve had both and they are both good in their own way.

Actually the Great Dane has been the easiest breed I’ve owned. I’ve had boxers and labs mostly and my Dane has been the most laid back and easiest to take care of.

I have an English Bulldog, and I've always loved Dobermans, Labs and Bullmastiffs. My next dog will be a European Doberman.

I agree. Their need for exercise is minimal compared to a Lab. After having GSD, Weimeraners, Choc Lab, Great Dane, and then the last 3 have been where I ended up... with Rottweilers. By far the most communicative breed I've known, beyond a few mutts that were off the chart with intelligence and communication skills. Dogs are amazing.

I'm in that situation currently. I would love to get a dog but I live in an apartment with just my daughter. We leave at 6:30 am and don't get home til around 6:30 pm. The only way it could work is if I paid someone to come and walk the dog every afternoon. Maybe I'll rerun the numbers cuz I would love to get a dog. My daughter was raised with a schnauzer until I divorced her mom.

adopt a housebroken 1-2yo dog from a breed specific rescue site or from an agency that has descriptions of their dogs. run a few trial days over the holidays when you're already off of work but need to leave for 3-6 hours, etc. slowly you can increase the trust you give the dog. OR you can kennel at first, then slowly let the dog have more and more time out of the kennel to roam the apt while you're away.

It isn’t.

I’ve been in a subdivision the past 2 years and haven’t had a dog here. They’ve been at my parents and I’ve hated every minute of it. As much as it kills me, I know I can’t keep my coon dog couped up in a 1/4 acre yard with one tree and nothing to do when my parents are surrounded by over 100 acres of Cool shite to do.

But I’ll not be dogless much longer
